The SWELC kicked off its 2023 old bird season with its first race being held from Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire with 96 club members sending 1,528 birds. On the 29/4/23 the birds were liberated by Carl and Pete at 13.30 into a light south wind its bean a busy close season before this event with the new north road amalgamation Futurity sales for the competing SWELC members it raising in the triple chancer just short of £80,000 a fabulous achievement to fly for and their breeder buyer making £3,495 and the Longford breeder buyer £1759 so plenty for the members to fly for this season plus the SWELC Scottish classic races in conjunction with the new north road amalgamation and the international championship club.

Over to the result of the first race, the top twenty positions are as follows claiming 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 15th open SWELC plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sodbury vale NRFC was Chris and John Adams flying 56 miles with their widowhood team of cocks and hens their winner a 2y wall Lunt & Green blue cock followed by a 1y blue Coreman cock then a 2y blue Hardy Kruger hen followed by a 2y blue chequer wall Lunt & Green cock with velocities of 1304, 2x 1303 and 1281.

4th, 5th  6th and 14th open plus 4th Sodbury vale NRFC was Steve Bennett flying 55 miles with his team of Gerrit Lahuis, Sean Hunt and Gordon Brothers birds blended together sent sitting ten day old pot eggs fed on S & S seeds of Sedgfield corn with velocities of 2 x 1299, 1297 and 1285.

7th open was Chris Templar and also claiming 1st South Bristol club flying 65 miles with a 2y chequer widowhood cock that was only flown as a young bird as last year Chris used all his cocks as pair birds for the hens to race back to but this year he has switched his cocks to the road and kept the hens back as pair birds for the 2023 season this bird being Lambrecht’s from Stuart Innett and Adam Wealthhall lines with a velocity of 1295.

8th open and 2nd south Bristol club was Andy George flying 63 miles with a 1y chequer Florengles cock bred by Mike Derrick of Wells Somerset flown on the traditional widowhood system doing 1294.578.

9th open was JH Cole flying 57 miles with a 2y blue hen doing 1294.094.

10th and 16th open plus 3rd South Bristol club was Anrez Stanowski flying 64 miles with a 1y blue Gabby Vandenbeale cock flown on the roundabout system and a 2y blue Gabby Vandenbeale cock doing 1291 and 1280.

11th, 12th and 18th open plus 4th south Bristol club was Steve Moseley flying 65 miles with 3 x widowhood flow Van Dyke hens doing 1290, 1288.636,and 1278.

13th open and 1st west Bristol club was Mr & Mrs Bedford flying 63 miles with a 2y chequer Herman Cuesters widowhood cock doing 1288.07

17th and 20th open plus 2nd and 3rd west Bristol club was A & D Collins flying 63 miles doing 1279 and 1276.

19th open was J Palmer & Son flying 63 miles with a 1y chequer hen doing 1277.
