RHONDDA VALLEY FED

Reports by Martin Dunn

HULLAVINGTON YB

And now for the crazy season, the start of young bird racing has been hit by the terrible weather we have had trying to train the birds up ready for the first race from Hullavington on 14th July, this was reflected by the entry of 945 pigeons entered by 54 of the 230 fed members.

The birds were liberated in a South West wind at 11.55, with the leading pigeons taking around 1 hour 22 minutes, a gappy race it turned out, it seemed as if the birds did not leave the race point that well, with good returns in the end, with most lofts having all the birds back.

Starting off at the same pace as 2006 is Abercwmboi’s Phillip Sheldon, Phillip had 4 together to take the first 4 positions, Phillip had an excellent young bird season in 2006, where he was runner-up for the fed young bird Averages, 2007 he seems to want to go one better. Phillip takes the first 4 positions at Club and Fed level, well done Phillip on an excellent performance.Ray Sheldon gets one for 5th club 10th fed, keeping it in the family at Abercwmboi.

Next to Clock was Newtown’s, D.Francis who clocks an early one for 5th fed. With the next pigeon to this over the Valley into the top of the Rhondda to Jacko Williams up at Maerdy, who wins the club and 6th fed, with the consistent Davies and Evans 2nd club 9th fed.

The Maerdy club is using the new E.T.S. system, although from what I am told there’s been a glitch in the system with pigeons not being recorded by the scanner, one fancier only had 2 pigeons out of 11 recorded. Hope this will be sorted out, not a good example for the outlay.

Next pigeons are again in the Rhondda Fach, Tylorstowns Brian Roberts keeps the form going into young birds taking 1st and 3rd club 7 and 18th  fed, just beating Leach Davies and Chilcott into 2nd club 8th fed.

Net batch through was straight up the Rhondda Fawr, the bigger of the 2 valleys, This is where Street and Hughes had  a good trap, winning 1st and 2nd at Tonypandy and 1st at Cwmparc, with their 3 timers taking 10,11,12 fed, they were followed at Tonypandy by Norman and Jason Bright, their 2 timers are 3rd and 4th club 14th and 19th fed.

At Penygraig, Dunn son Seal, manage to take 1st2nd and 3rd club, first timer is a dtr of their Maidstone National winner, taking 16th fed, next 2 are Vandenabeele crosses with the parents coming from O’bryan and Jones from Port Talbot and the Burns bros of Newcastle.

At Trebanog, new starters M/M Cowell time their first ever winner in their very first race, well done both from your fellow club mates at Trebanog, gaining 15th fed as well, 2, 3rd club is Brian Samuel.

Next pigeons then are split between first drop in Newport to the furthest flyers in Kenfig Hill, winners at Kenfig Hill are Ian Bousie taking 1,2,3,4,5 club, 20,22,23,24,26 fed, with  L.Colledge at the Ferns taking the first 4 positions, 21,25,27,28fed.

Final 2 winners are taken by the Cannon Bros at Pontypridd, This Famous name being Kept on by the silent partner Dai Meads since the passing of the last of the brothers, John and Wood take 2nd club and Dai Morgan takes 3rd.

Brown and Jones wins at Ynyshir and take 30th fed with it, these 2 have had around 6 firsts so far this season.

That’s the first race out of the way, hopefully the rest of the races will have the same success returns wise.

Second race was again from Hullavington, with a slight break in the weather, there was more training carried out in the week leading up to this race, this showed with an increased turn out of 123 members sending just short of 3000 pigeons.

Chris Butler got them away at 14:30 into a South West wind, with the velocities this week up into the 1400 a good race was had with only a few missing at Clock opening.

Same result this week, with the impressive Phillip Sheldon, sweeping the board again, this week he gets 3 together to take 1,2,3 at Abercwmboi, 1,2,3 Rhondda Valley fed. All the more remarkable is the fact that the same pigeon has topped the fed 2 weeks running. From what I have been told Phillip works his pigeons hard and as can be see the results follow. Congratulations Phillip on an excellent set of results. Clive and Carwyn Harris take 4th club 10th fed.

Butler Bros edge it at Cwmparc, decimals splitting the first 4 at this club, with the fed position of 4th, 6th 7th and 8th going to this very competitive club, names in the frame are the Butlers followed by FredTucker and Ray Williams, with the second Butler timer at 4th club.

Next to time was Street and Hughes  this week they take first at Tonypandy, 5th fed, with Norman and Jason bright 2nd and 3rd club 11th 12th fed. These all came out of a batch of around 25 pigeons that came from the direction of Tylorstown.

Dunn son Seal, got 2 out of this batch when winning at Penygraig Con, first was a Belg. Rung  Cock from Marcel van Ostaeyen, pooled to £1, second was a Boddaert van damme bloodlines, 1st and 2nd club 9th and 13th fed, with Kevin Andrews taking 3rd club 16th fed In his first Y.B. race.

Brett Jones and  M/M Green take the first 2 at Tonyrefail 14th and 15th fed, with Mal and Darron Woodland 2,4,5th club , 22,24,26th fed.

L.Colledge and son again take the first 3 at the Ferns club in Newport, 17,18,19 fed , with M.Gibbons taking the first 2 at the Newport club itself, 23 and 25th fed. From the shortest we go to the longest with Payne,Parry and Davies winning at Kenfig Hill and topping the West section comfortably, M.Docherty taking 2nd section for Port Talbot and Hurley son and Say 3rd section at Kenfig Hill .

Final club winners appearing on the result are Lee, Hughes and Harris at Treherbert and S.Williams – Jacko,  who wins for the second week in succession at Maerdy.

Up at Trebanog it was a good day for Jason Seldon, who takes 1st club with N.Jones taking second and Chris Jones in for 3rd club.
