Saturday April 19th 2014 saw the opening races for the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation and Derby Burton & District South Road Federation. First to liberate was the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation who were at Cheltenham and they got the pigeons away at 10-00 in a light east north east wind.
In Derby South Road Club opening their account for the season were Roy Gregory & Son of Mackworth who took the top two positions doing 1338 & 1336, these being the first two pigeons into Derby. Their winner was a three year old blue cock followed by a yearling blue cock. In third & fourth positions was the Chaddesden loft of John & Steve Hicks doing 1301 & 1300. Their first pigeon was a two year old mealy cock followed by a six year old blue cock. In their five bird section John & Steve Hicks take first & third positions doing 1300 & 1236 with Roy Gregory & Son in second & fourth positions doing 1265 & 1218.
The first winners in Derby's new club the Silver Ghost Homing Society was Woolley & Rogers with a four year old blue cock doing 1312. This pigeon has now been named the Runaway Cock. Taking second position with a two year old blue cheq cock doing 1261 was Rueben Hough. Brian Dyjas took third with a blue cock doing 1230 followed by Tom Chadwick in fourth position doing 1226 with a yearling b/cheq cock.
In Etwall & District Flying Club getting the first red card of the season was Alan Peach & Son with a 3 year old grizzle cock doing 1332. In second position with a three year old cheq cock doing 1244 was Steve Billings with third & fourth positions going to Dave Williams & Son doing 1227 & 1226.
In Ilkeston Bulls Flying Club Rick Shelton made a clean sweep taking all the first four positions doing 1291, 1278, 1275 & 1273. Rick's winner was a three year old blue cock this pigeon being a previous fed topper.His second pigeon was a yearling blue cock followed by two three year old blue cocks.
In Osmaston Park Homing Society Nicholson Brothers of Spondon won their opening race doing 1196 they also took third position doing 1118. Their winner was a two year old cheq cock and their second pigeon was a blue yearling hen. In second position with a two year old blue cock doing 1193 was Mick Willis & Family with Mick Stone in fourth doing 1117 with a with a blue yearling hen.
Derby Premier were at Windrush with the Derby Burton & District South Road Federation and the pigeons were liberated at 12.00 in a north east wind. Getting the winner was Roy Gregory & Son doing 1356 with a 3 year old cheq hen followed by Paul & Lynda Todd who took the next three positions doing 1335.2, 1335 & 1334 all three pigeons were yearling blue hens.
