They represent a life’s work of study and enthusiasm  and should appeal to many different types of people. I hope for some readership in China/Japan and Asia, as they are my best work in print, with years in the creation-it is my contribution to pigeon racing-all the best

KEY TIPS ON DISTANCE @ MARATHON PIGEON RACING.

A distance pigeon is one in the clock at 500 to 700 miles racing to your loft-marathon birds race more than 700 miles home. The essence is the great condition of the bird when basketed and that is down to you the fancier. Every racer in your loft needs to go to the distance, no matter how it is bred. Judge a bird by the results to YOUR loft ,not some sales hype about the name of the breed. It is practical pigeon racing that equals results, and you must have the ability in your head to do it.  Most birds have given all by 750 miles UK, with rare one’s going over 800 miles International. These are the basic elements from my 42 years involved with the sport.

 DISTANCE, DISTANCE AND MORE DISTANCE.

Enthusiasts, dreamers, the ambitious and optimistic fanciers enjoy the idea of 5 to 700 mile racing. Nice to see the BICC in some expansion to the North of England. The onus is on the perfect preparation of the bird by the fancier in order to tackle these races. In the right human hands there are plenty of birds about with 700 miles potential by the men of the North. In the main you are looking for day 2 arrivals, especially in head wins. We see a few ardent specialists having a go these days as the most popular racing is sprint and up to 500 miles on the day. A marathon man needs a long fuse, a hard head and a big heart, as it is a game of endurance and patience .

HOW TO ESTABLISH A MARATHON LOFT?

Such an objective is for the specialist, yet anyone can have a go. Source some 7 to 900 mile proven bloodlines and breed many young birds for testing. The BICC is the ideal testing ground for your birds. As 2 year olds send every bird in the loft as far as you can and in great condition with around 12 hrs on the wing in a build-up race. If you time good birds over 700 miles, you qualify as a marathon fancier. Quite a few manage it, and as it is difficult, you will value the experience and the birds that do it. Examine every detail of your preparation for these races and persist until you time some good ones for strain building. The right type of mindset is crucial for this type of racing-

 THE SELF SURVIVAL URGE.

The human psyche ,from deep within the brain is driven by the urge for survival. It is a life impulse and force that may transcend all thoughts and beliefs in others, gods and systems. I found mine in remote wilderness, woods ,deserts and in the concrete jungle of despair. The near death experience in Kabul shocked me into life some 39 years ago ,and I know the meaning of life from deep within. Education and main stream consciousness leaves a shallow veneer and traps you into convention, when I crave the creative life. With age may come the urge for immortality and the continued survival of the human spirit, as man likes to leave a footprint in the sands of time.
