THE PURE HOBBY FANCIER
This archetype may have a profound love for and specialist interest in the racing pigeon. He may not sell pigeons for profit, yet be motivated by his own performances and the development of his strain. Over many years this person will hold great insight into what it takes to race at all levels of competition. This traditional fancier is becoming rather rare in the dominant world of commercial racing. I found this man when Nicholas Harvey contacted me 9 years ago. At the top echelon of racing the sport is more and more mainstream commercial and professional. Personally I like pigeons that stand out from the crowd.

WHAT BECAME OF THE BARCELONA DREAM?
With success in 2 parts of the country ,part of the dream has been realised. However it has proven ,over 23 years to be difficult for others to reach the goal of a good timing from this epic racepoint. Entry no?s have been increased over 25 years, yet are now fairly stable for a while at just over 200. Not to all tastes, the race will remain in the minority for UK and Irish participation. The irony is that thousands of Barcelona bred birds are bought, bred from and passed on. The nature of the race is very selective of the type of bird and the patience and single-minded dedication of the fancier. Some illustrious fanciers who have done well at Barcelona International are Dave Delea with 3 National wins, Padfields into Wales, Mark Gilbert, my partner Nicholas Harvey into Taunton, Frank Kay, Marco Wilson, Ray Rutty, Mick Mcgrevy and Trevor Robinson and others. Some of these names will form part of historical folklore. Other people are dreaming now of mastering marathon racing, yet it remains a dying art. Jim Emerton.

FLIGHT PATH OVER MY GARDEN.
This autumn I have observed 4 species of geese, as my senses came alive to their beauty. Their were skeins of Barnacle/Greylag/Pink and Canada. The twilight is haunted by babbling mallard, lone cormorants, tawny owls, gulls, jackies and roosting wood pigeons. During the day, in mindful contemplation I see charms of goldies,2 species of woodpecker, and a host of other species. In reality we are surrounded by the natural world, yet city slickers are in love with material, inanimate objects and money. To my minds I they are lost souls, in need of spirituality generated by profound feelings for nature. Jim Emerton.

SHORT TERM ENTHUSIASM AND INSTANT GRATIFICATION.
Hooked on prescribed psychotropic drugs, the social media and technology people are seeking the highs of frequent stimulation of the psyche. I have many interests and creative projects, yet seek enduring goals to be realised in the future. With the advent of selfies, millions are seeking egocentric rewards, rather than the depths of spiritual experience or mystical insight. British politics and its people are creating chaos, which has the dynamism of a future new order. Mental health problems will be the consequence of cerebral overload as the pace hots up. Nice to slow down and become reflective, philosophical and more inward looking. We need to find and look at our beliefs and filter out both illusion and delusion, through personal insight and rational order out of collective chaos. Jim Emerton.

SALES TRICKS OF THE TRADE.
In adverts persuasive techniques using clever wording, hyped language, colour, size and glossy pictures are the source of money generating sales. These may impact on your brain and mind and lure you into parting with your money. Wise to be shrewd and study adverts before you buy. Some of the most genuine of fanciers will swap birds, or sell at deflated prices. The lesson to learn is that top quality racers and breeders of versatile birds that will perform at marathon levels over 700 miles, especially at International level are rare. The key to success is the knowledge, skill and expertise of the fancier at the end of the day. The fancier makes the pigeon by conditioning it and racing it. Wise to go and learn from the old stalwarts of the pigeon sport, who have been at the top for many years. What is his system, how does he tick, why do his birds earn great results at all levels. The answers lie in the head of the fancier .
