NODDING HEAD BEHAVIOUR OF PIGEONS

Head nodding is common in the avian world, yet not all species do it. Some scientists articulate that this brain-based movement is linked with balance, sight and depth perception in the development and evolution of the species as a survival strategem. I like to see it as a human, yet the absolute knowledge of the reasons is unclear. We think we know yet can be arrogant and deluded in our interpretation of the natural world. To me a racing pigeon looks both charming and beautiful in the flow of its behaviour.

A LIFETIMES CONTRIBUTION TO PIGEONS

I think organisations like the RPRA should honour certain individuals with say a lifetime achievement award in recognition for their contribution to the sport. It is a little grandiose, subjective and unusual, yet is a nice idea. I am biased towards authors, as they educate and inform the popular consciousness of the times. Zsolt Talaber is a world authority with his books on pigeons, a doctor and vet. A person from the commercial section would require more than money to be a recipient of the award, as a creative, original contribution to knowledge of the actual bird and racing is essential. The award would reflect dedication and brains applied to the pure aspects of pigeons and their racing. Something perhaps for the politicians, groups and committees to contemplate?

COMMENTS ON MY WRITING.

The essence of my self-expression is writing. Each day I seek the joy and euphoria and the mindfulness of this activity. It is the drug of choice and truly intoxicating. As a gifted student, my intelligent life is the complete study of my own inner world in relation to what we call the outer world experienced by the brain/mind synthesis. A high, measured IQ the food of curiosity coupled with a restless, creative imagination powered by the unconscious psyche. I live around the creative writing experience in books, magazines, articles and up to 17 Mensa Special Interest Groups. Education has nurtured the gift along with 11 years in formal academia. Traveling to around 60 countries and Islands and to The Himalaya writing induces sanity and expresses creative eccentricity and originality, and higher consciousness-

The chief motive in my work is self-expression in a lucid and original form. Unique ideas and creative imagery develop individual personality. Although eccentric, I like writing books and articles that are read, recognised and have an impact on the popular consciousness of the times. The initial pleasure is psychic, deep rooted, and condensed over years of self-discipline and application to creative objectives that are acceptable to larger society. The creative process induces euphoria, where higher consciousness may transmute into mystical feelings. In the final analysis I seek truth and the unification of the total being and personality.

THE PIGEON RACING COMMUNITY

It is a complex, global network of souls with some shared interests in the humble pigeon. My experiences in it have been life-enhancing. The purist has a basic love of the bird, for what it is. We attempt to understand them, although absolute knowledge is impossible. The sport can cope with every shade of humanity from the boy club man to the rich professional, and all are potential race winners. Real friends are few, since the heart of it is competition, and every man is your rival. I like the idea of a good partner or helping people to do well. I set the bar high, as Barcelona International clocking is essential in my philosophy. Timing from this race is always possible up to 1000 miles in the UK@ Ireland. Specialists, stalwarts and oddballs surface at this level. The community of the   sport has changed with new science and technology, and the will to win has heightened emotions especially greed, resentment and jealousy of which we may all plead guilty. Most people are out to make a fast buck from birds, as capitalism and materialistic values have been on the rise. However, all is forgotten in the rose garden, on a summers evening when that marathon bird falls from the sky.

LETTER FOR PUBLICATION IN BHW FROM JIM EMERTON.

The readers may know that I am ultra-keen on the future practice of BICC International Racing into Ireland. Barcelona is my passion and represents, in my perception and belief the supreme test of fancier and bird. My Belief Trophy awaits the hero who times a bird in race time into Ireland from the BICC Barcelona migration. The news would ignite the pigeon racing world, and would be the realisation of genius and the creation of a true champion bird. With this concept in mind, any attempt by the Irish or others to live the dream needs support and backing from the larger fraternity and popular pigeon culture. Let’s us all encourage those who seek to be eccentric and take a trip into sporting excellence and history!
