THE RACE THAT CHANGED MY LIFE. BY JIM EMERTON.

At the age of 72, I can reflect on the nostalgia of a rich, diverse and colourful life as poet, philosopher, Mensan, author, teacher, journalist and pigeon man. In July 1995, I sent my remaining 6 birds to Barcelona International. These had the awesome and onerous task of flying 879 measured miles to Sycamore Cottage, Holtby, York. It was a seminal, dreamy and outrageous thing to do, being far further and serious than NFC Pau at 735 miles, that I had achieved on day 2 in 1994 at velocity 1035 ypm. At Strensall PRS Club, Denney struck the clock, and I told the members I am going to clock. Miracles do happen, as I heard the dark, 2yr old cock, Barcelona Dream drop on the loft. Emotions high, he looked massive as I timed him in at 879 miles to be the longest flying bird, ever in race time in the 43 year history of the BICC. The corollary is that he won and RPRA medal and became a champion producer of Musgrove Persistent/Addiction etc and bred 1st WDA St Omer National in his first nest. I verified 2 more at 879 miles in the race and paired the champ to little Dark Enchantment who was 1 of 2 hens in the race. Since the epic race of 1995 Barcelona Dream has become a star, and I still love the bird, a freak of nature, and the transcendence and total high of the whole experience. CLAYTON AND GEOFF PREECE CHAT TO JIM EMERTON.

High the fancy is most impressed by your plan and initiative to enter the Perpignan International pigeon race in 2021. You achieved this when the chips were down, it was most complex with politics and bureaucracy and people thought it was not possible to race from France in the BICC or any other organisation. In my mind’s eye it reinforces what outstanding individuals can do with personality and pure will. Please detail your intense planning and preparation for this race from beginning to end, as the pigeon world will be ignited by what you reveal to us all. To cap it all you timed good birds in the actual race as a tribute to your management skills. Well known in the BICC earlier races, kindly tell us how you do it, illustrated by pictures of some star birds. Please respond to me with your personal comments, as what you have done is both outstanding, individual and seminal - Thanks Jim Emerton High IQ Society.

GROWING UP GIFTED BY JIM EMERTON/MENSA

A gifted child, I was a dreamy, sensitive and detached boy with an eccentric personality. As now at 72, my thirst for knowledge of the external worlds and inner being was insatiable with a rich and profound inner life. I found myself in academia for 11 years as a student with qualifications as an horticulturist and science teacher. An IQ of 154, I have matured into a poet/philosopher and author of 9 books, the subject of 2 films and a journalist. The gift manifests itself as conscious hunger, curiosity and creative originality, with the modern essence being the establishment of sanity-a shrink would struggle to classify me - Jim Emerton.
