The Joe Murphy Column 28-08-16

The Joe Murphy Column

Last Saturday 13th August I assisted Davie the convoyer with the North of Scotland with their liberation at  Thornton, however prior to the 07-30 liberation I contacted Stuart Maskame of Peterhead who is a member of this federation. I asked him if he was up for ‘Face Timing’ the event as he was driving home he said he would phone me prior to the liberation. At 07-27 Stuart phoned and I showed him the conditions at the liberation site with beautiful blue sky with some white fluffy clouds and the wind was a light west. I retreated enough so as to show Stuart the transporter and Davie then released the birds on the appointed time. Stuart and I spoke to each other as the birds were being liberated and then I showed him the birds going into 2 large batches before heading northwards for home. Stuart said that this was great as he could tell his club mates about the liberation and there was nothing to stop the young birds from having a good race. You will see in the North of Scotland result further down that he had 3 birds in the top 10 of his federation. Stuart says the SNFC should do something on the same lines as this they can video their liberation and then post it on the clubs web site and everyone can then see what the liberation was like. It could also be a video of the weather conditions at the race point which is holding up the release of the birds. This would be better than putting on the web site for fancier to check again in an hour s time. If people can see the weather is not good then they know themselves that it is going to take time for this to clear. Then once it is agreed to liberate the bird’s film this and post it on the national web site. It is not hard to do and would be of great benefit to the MEMBERS. Let’s see if this happens in the 2017 season????  I have attached a picture of Lee Dyer from Nettlestone whom I wrote about last week but his picture did not come until after the article was away. Still better late than never eh Lee.

Ayrshire Federation

Received an email and photograph from Archie McIntyre of the above federation he wrote ‘Hi Joe, I wonder if you can include a small report on Andy Barbour's record breaking result in Ayrshire Federation from Arniston on the 23rd July 2016 for inclusion in your week column. As well as the report Joe, I have included a photo of Andy holding his federation topper from Sedgefield old birds this year and I have also included the Ayrshire Federation result for Arniston were 2146 birds were liberated at 07-30 into a light south west wind. Andy Barbour from West Kilbride was flying 70 miles 1363 yards; Andy timed 26 birds in 20 seconds with the first 20 in the federation being recorded in 9 seconds. Andy fly’s mostly Galaxy Loft pigeons with some new additions notable Hardy Kruger and Mark & Dickie Evans pigeons.  70% of Andy’s young birds are darkness with the remainder natural and it was a mixture of both in the drop. I think it’s also worth mentioning Joe, 35 birds arrived in the batch, 6 birds failed to record and we later discovered that one half of one of the pads was not working. Once all the birds had trapped, 3 strays remained sitting on the hut roof. I moved towards the hut to chase the strays off and I had just raised my stick and the birds could not have been more than 1 foot off the loft when Percy swooped past my head, up the front of the loft trying to grab one of the stays as they lifted off the loft. It was unbelievable to see just how close it was to me and to hitting one of the strays. Thankfully it did not get anything.   Now after seeing Percy so close, this might help to explain why the birds did not hang about when they arrived. I have also attached a copy of the federation result for you Joe yours Archie McIntyre.’

Joe’s Joke

"4 Worms In Church"
Four worms and a lesson to be learned!!!!

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.  Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup...
The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol . . . . . . Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke . ....Dead.
Third worm in chocolate syrup . . . . Dead.
Fourth worm in good clean soil . . . Alive
So the Minister asked the congregation, "What did you learn from this demonstration?"
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said . . .
"As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"
That pretty much ended the service!
