NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

Reports by Joe Murphy

Margaret and I attended the Arbroath Racing pigeon society annual trophy presentation and dinner in the Rosely Hotel in Arbroath. As we arrived we met club president Bill Dorward who let us into the bar for refreshment prior to the main event. The main guest of the evening was Ernie Crabb of Monifieth whose wife could not attend as he had not been keeping well of late; another absentee was club secretary Andy Shepherd’s good lady and we hope both these ladies are now on the road to recovery. After a lovely meal which was piping hot Bill Dorward welcomed everyone to the club presentation he expressed the excellent results the members had achieved in SNFC racing this year and hoped this would continue for many more years to come. Bill asked guest of honour Ernie to say a few words; he replied that it was a great honour to be the clubs guest; he started off in the sport in Arbroath as a young Laddie with his ‘pal’s’ Andy Shepherd and Jim George (Round O) he told some ‘cracking’ stories regarding to this era and had the company in stitches. It then came to the main event of the evening and with the organisational skills of Andy Shepherd he asked Ernie for his assistance in presenting the trophies.

The Dorward Cup for 1st Eastbourne was won by Joe McLeod; the Alexander Cup for 1st Falaise was won by Kevin Murphy and was collected by Rachel; The Victoria Cup for 1st Alencon SNFC was won by Bill Dorward; The Fettes Cup for 1st Wakefield won by Mr. & Mrs. Cameron; the Munro Cup for the Old bird average won by Kevin Murphy with a velocity of 1102.25 (Kieran collected this cup); the Runner Up for the old bird average was won by Joe McLeod with a velocity 1032.40. The Stewart Cup for the young bird average was won by Jim Bruce from the ACORD Loft with a velocity of 1118.46; the Runner Up was Kevin Murphy with a velocity of 1097.64. The Cargill Trophy for the best average Eastbourne old bird & Wakefield young bird were Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Cameron with a velocity of 1071.88; the Runner Up was Kevin Murphy with a velocity of 1071.12. The Fyffe-Jameson cup for the Combined Average was won by Kevin Murphy (his youngest son Matthew collected this trophy) with a velocity of 1097.39; with Runner Up being Joe McLeod with a velocity of 1019.87 and the final presentation of the Grant Medal for the Club Champion was won by Kevin Murphy; this medal has been in the club since 1901 and the names engraved on it over the years makes impressive reading however the one that captured me was the Johnny & Paul Dora in 1961 the year they won the SNFC Gold Cup with the ‘Fifer’. To say that Kevin was not a proud young man would be an understatement, to be associated with all the top fanciers from Arbroath to win this coveted award was indeed a great honour; and a fitting tribute for all his hard work with his pigeons this year. To be honest the 3 children going up for the trophies brought back a lot of happy memories for me as I remember going up for the young bird cup when I was a wee Laddie in Kennoway club when my dad flew as Murphy & son. They were so proud to the cups that believe it or not they took them to their beds with them when we got home. It was so funny in the morning seeing them coming into the living room with the cup in their hands saying ‘Good Morning’ and then going and placing it on the mantelpiece. Wonderful times and the memories will live with me forever as this is what pigeon racing is all about; not just the fancier receiving the glory but the whole family and I’m proud to see my son carry on my values and principles within his life.

Christmas Tree

It took me all weekend, but I finally got my tree up! "Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Joke

A little girl asks her mum, ' Mum, can I take the dog for a walk around the block?'
Her mum replies 'No, because she is on heat.' 'What does that mean?' asked the child.
'Go and ask your father. I think he's in the garage.' The little girl goes out to the garage and says, 'Dad, can I take Lulu for a walk around the block? I asked Mum, but she said the dog was on the heat, and to comeand ask you. He took a rag, soaked it in petrol, and scrubbed the dog's backside with it to disguise the scent, and said 'Ok, you can gonow, but keep Lulu on the leash and only goone timearound theblock. The little girl left and returned a few minutes later with no dog on the leash. Surprised, Dad asked, 'Where's Lulu?'
