The Joe Murphy Column
Received a phone call from Peter Barlow of Coombe Hill asking if I could help him out as one of his pigeons had been reported by a lady non-fancier who had the pigeon in her garden in Arbroath. I gave Peter Charlie Cameron’s phone number and he contacted Peter and obtained the address were the pigeon was at. Believe it or not it was across the road from Kevin & Julie’s house. So he asked Julie for a basket and gave it to the lady of the house, who put feeding into the basket and caught the pigeon. Charlie then looked after the bird until the courier collected it on 27th July and it should be with Peter on the 29th. I noticed Peter’s photograph on the front of the BHW 9th July issue as he won 1st open British Barcelona Club Berwick National so our congratulations go to him and good luck for the rest of the season, Charlie and I are only too glad to help out a fellow fancier.

News from Archie MacIntyre who wrote; ‘Hi Joe, The federation first young bird race of the season finally kicked off on Sunday 24th July from Lauder with an entry of 1,811 birds for a distance of between 59 miles to 80 miles to the north end of the fed. Jim O’Hare had the birds up and away at 11-30 into a light east wind. Reports from the liberation site were that the birds cleared immediately into westerly direction. This race was a strange race indeed. The northerly members of the federation were reporting on average between 80% to 90% returns. While in the south end of the federation they were reporting 25-50% returns. You would have thought they had been at a different race point going by their velocities as well. Leading the way in the federation this week on 1652.6 is Hugh Wallace of Darvel. The sire of Hugh’s fed topping pigeon was a gift bird from Ronnie Evans of Sunderland and is bred down from his good mealy ‘Combine cock’, winner of 2nd open from an entry of 22,000 birds. The dam is a daughter of Hugh’s 10 year old Jan Aarden stock cock that is responsible for many winners for Hugh and others when paired to his 2017 Ypres SNFC section winner.
2nd & 3rd federation this week on 1620.3 and 1619.6 is fellow club member John Shepherd of Beith flying in Dalry HS. John works tirelessly training his birds and takes it in turns with fellow club members and close neighbours, Jim Shepherd and Robert Reid, known as the (3 Amigos) from Beith. This could not have happened to a nicer person in the sport and he is always willing to wait back to load the transporter and help out where required. The dam of John’s 2nd fed winner is a Frans Zwols. She is a granddaughter of “The Bruce” when paired to “The Queen” and came from Willie Donnachie. Her brother won 1st club, 8th fed Blaydon this year taking and was also 2nd club, 5th fed, 5th section F SNFC Huntingdon this year. The sire goes back to Jim Shepherd’s ‘Heinz 57’ family crossed with a great grandson of Michael Curries from Moffatt’s 2nd open Newbury winner. The 3rd fed is bred down off a daughter (a late bred) off Robert Reid’s 12th open Buckingham winner which Robert gifted to John at the end of last season. Sire is a ‘House of Aarden’ cock, containing bloodlines of Rainbow Warrior/ Padfield/ Invincible lines. All youngsters are flown natural and prior to the first race, they had 13 tosses out to Euro Central along with the other 2 Amigos. We have been really fortunate with training this year even on days when they have taken over 2 hours; the birds have managed to stick together on return. I would like to pass on my congratulations to Hughie Wallace on topping the federation. Thanks to Hugh and John for the photos and information on their pigeons.

News from Bernie Britton ‘Hi Joe, hope you’re all well and staying safe. The Broxburn & Uphall result from Stobs Camp had 6 members sending 213 birds, with the convoy liberated at 10am into a light North East wind. Winning 1st club is the partnership of Sid Steven & Davie Gullane flying a natural mealy cock. Sire and dam are from stock birds gifted to them from his good friend John McNeill. Sire has ‘Sanny’s Memory’ John’s Combine winner and ‘Heather’ John’s 2nd open Gold Cup and Jocky King’s ‘Mary’. Dam has won twice from Ancenis so you will see Joe a well-bred young bird. 2nd& 3rd club is Gordon Mackenzie with his first a blue-bar cock on darkness a ‘Gabby’ from his good mate Stuart Knowles. Gordon’s 2nd bird is a blue bar ‘Gabby’ home bred from his new stock on darkness. Well done to Davie Jamieson on winning the fed taking the first 8 positions.
