After a 24hr delay to basketing we arrived at Retford , a market town in Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands of England, 31 miles (50 km) from Nottingham, and 23 miles (37 km) west of Lincoln.The flying distance back into Lanarkshire,Scotland is around 210 miles.
The 3,350 birds were away at 10 50 am in a light North East wind.When racing from the east side,North East winds tend to be more of a tail wind than on their faces.
This one proved so with the winners well into the high 1500s.
Like most east winds it does tend to play havoc with the convoy and especially yearlings and this was no different ,with many short of a few.
What ever happened to the prevailing south west wind we are used to have!. The weather was "red hot" and again this has a significant impact on the birds.
Anyway the convoyers again done a first class job and the winning birds rattled up the road in good fashion.
This weeks winner is Dave Allison of Greenfield club,his 3yr old Herman Cuester cock came home like a "rocket" and is a excellent winner of 1st West sect 1st Open Lanarkshire Federation.When speaking with Dave he said he has never seen a pigeon trap quicker.Dave only seen his feet the winner moved that quick His good friend Frank Welsh, who is always about when the birds are racing, was phoned by Dave to say he thought it was going to be fast.Only to tell him on arrival the winner had already arrived.
The winner was purchased from Dave Atkin as a group of six by Dave's Dad, for his sons birthday.The winner has been a top performer already winning a number of top prizes including 3rd Open Fed and 1st Lanarkshire Social circle.He was paired late March and raced on roundabout,and given his nest bow for motivation.He has won his fair share of pools over the years.A very reliable pigeon!
Dave as everyone in this are knows can win at any distance but mainly these days concentrates on the National events.He will enjoy this fantastic result and will look forward to the longer events.Well done Dave.
