LANARKSHIRE SOCIAL CIRCLE
2014 PRESENTATION
by Tom Corrie
Mr & Mrs Elliot of Newbiggin win the elusive Gold Cup
John Wheatcroft (R) presents Davie Elliot
This year like every year in the past we all attended the very nice Avonbridge Hotel in Hamilton, Central Scotland to award those fanciers who like to compete at the very top level of West Section, sending their birds with the Lanarkshire and Scottish National Flying Club programmes.
The visitors at the top table were from the Scottish Borders, top fanciers in their own right and those that have supported the Lanarkshire Social Circle for many a year. These were Raymond White, Michael Currie and John Wheatcroft. Michael Currie’s reply on behalf of the visitors was very enjoyable, very sincere and honest to the core. Thanks very much lads for your time and support. As always the food and service was first class.
The holy grail of cups "The Gold Cup" hadn't been won for five years. Why? Because it’s so difficult to win, probably the hardest in all clubs, nominating four birds and timing one in race time in each of the five longest races in the SNFC programme. But along came Mr & Mrs Elliot of Newbiggin in their first season to succeed where others have failed. For those that haven't heard the name of this partnership you must have been sleeping for the past forty years. Davie Elliot is "Simply the Best" when it comes to distance racing in the West of Scotland. We are very proud to have him. His record in distance racing into Lanarkshire is OUTSTANDING. This year alone he had arguably one of his best, winning 2 x 1st section SNFC and 2 x 2nd SNFC (possibly a record in the West Section) to his previous remarkable record including two 1st Open SNFC wins. The biggest cheer of the night was for Dave when he came up to receive the Gold Cup. We don't as a sport celebrate our champions enough and Davie is every bit a champion fancier who can condition pigeons for any distance and especially for his beloved SNFC programme. Well done Davie, enjoy your win and remember all those fanciers who have their eyes on that trophy for 2015.
John Alston of Ravenstruther near Lanark, also one of the all time great distance fanciers, hit the crossbar winning second prize in the Gold cup waiting on buses and all that!
Jim Wilkinson of Airdrie in his first season also had a great start winning two cups for his cracking year’s performances.
Norman Orr of Larkhall needs special mention for winning the best average trophy all National races - truly brilliant. West Section averages in the SNFC again, truly "BRILLIANT FLYING" Mr Consistency.
The other winners are very much household names in the club but deserve every reward for their effort in a season, which was one of the hardest to date.
Well done lads, this gives you the zest to go on and win more at the distance next year.
The night flowed well and with comedy from Ronnie Reid and the guest speaker Raymond Mearns the night was a very enjoyable. Well we will see you all back for the young bird exchange night and breeder/buyer night before the start of next season. Thanks to club secretary Davie McCaig for his professionalism and the committee and friends for their support of this prestigious club.
