Leicester Continental Club Poitiers and Vire Provisional Reports

Leicester Continental Club Poitiers and Vire Provisional reports

So to the final old bird races of the season and the double header from Vire and Poitiers which were flown after a 3 day holdover on the Tuesday. With a stiff wind forecast it was expected that both races would be fairly tough affairs although when I heard the times from Vire I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised as I thought they may have been a little slower than to be honest, but there we go, what do I know!

Not for the first time this year I am going to remind of you the amazing exploits of the Summers Bros and Daughter partnership of Braunstone Town. Hugely committed fanciers, this team have gone from strength to strength since their house move a few years back and each year they continue to put up top performances in the MNFC, this year has been no exception. After a couple of near misses it appears they have broken their Leicester Continental Club with victory in the Silver Race from Vire. The bird in question topped the Leicester South Road Fed just a few weeks earlier and this was her first foray over the Channel, what an introduction to Channel racing after 5 nights in the basket! She is a daughter of the fantastic “Carentan Queen”, a multi MNFC performer in her own right, and the father of the winner also has 3 firsts to his name.

Second to verify was Mick Lennon of Nuneaton, putting in some strong performances this year, as is the duo in 3rd place, the Gateley pairing of the South East section, who after 3 strong races prior to this double header were leading the way in the Super League Championship, will they still be there after this weeks racing, only time will tell. Mick Beadle and Daughter are in 4th spot currently, Mick really seems to come to the party later in the season and I am sure he will be a force to be reckoned come the young bird races in August and September, a real dark horse! To round off the Vire Provisional result we have Rob Glover in 5th place, who we will mention again in a couple of minutes!

Well that was the Vire race, onto the big one now, the Blue Riband race for the Midland National as well as the Leicester Continental Club. Due to the weather the birds were brought back around 100 miles to Poitiers which is still 430 miles roughly to the members here in the LCC. After 5 nights in the basket that’s enough mileage for anyway at the end of a trying season, and it proved to be a real fight to the finish in the MNFC. For 2 glorious hours the whole of Leicestershire and the Continental Club had our fingers crossed as our very own Rob Glover led the MNFC until being pipped by a superb pigeon flying over 500 miles on the day in real testing conditions. I know Rob is very disappointed to not quite hang on but 1st Leicester Continental Club, 1st SC Section and 2nd Open MNFC Blue Riband National is not to be sniffed at and the bird in question was also Rob’s Nom Pigeon within the LCC, hopefully he nominated her in the Open as well, we will soon find out!

From what I can make out it appears only 3 members verified from Poitiers, along with Rob is his Nuneaton Club-mate Mick Lennon, a great day all round for these two Leicestershire/Warwickshire border fanciers. We then go right up to the top of the South East Section for the final bird to be clocked and verified from Poitiers, to the Crossley and Truszowski twosome. Well done to all three fanciers for recording birds for this Blue Riband Event, we are all extremely proud of your efforts and showing everybody how strong the Leicester Continental Club is!

Frank Bristow and Rob Glover

The final result for Vire and Poitiers will be publicised as soon as the MNFC result is available, get those young birds ready as the young bird races will be here before you know it!
