Who needs a holiday abroad with all the sunshine we are having this year in the UK, it’s that hot the lawns are even giving up and turning to dust. Probably by the time you are reading this the weather will have broken and thunderstorms here there and everywhere. The pigeons have certainly not liked it, they have been suffering for weeks and that has taken its toll on the nest boxes with many empty until the next round of yearlings fill them up again. I was talking to Geoff Bebbington about the longer races and he was telling me that he had pulled his Tarbes pigeons because of the pending hot weather for the race day and the following days.

The local fancies in the Middlewich FC were at Messac when Anthony Evans took the red card recording a vel of 1290ypm. It’s good to see Anthony back in full swing after being away for a number of years. DJ&CJ Wilkinson are 2nd after David clocked a dark w/f yearling cock from the Taveirne-Rigole cross Jan Aarden. David getting ahead of his son Craig racing as Dickens & Wilkinson who are 3rd on 1186ypm. They clocked a dark yearling cock sent sitting 10 days bred by Anthony Evans from his Jan Polders. The team were also 4th with a blue yearling cock sent on 10-day eggs bred from out old Taveirne-Rigole lines being a g-son of the old pied cock, this one prized in the first North West Classic race this year. The lofts on the photo are those of the Dickens & Wilkinson and the chequer pied hen sitting in the bowl is their 1st Cheshire Combine Carentan.

In the Acton Bridge club, the first 4 went to Curtis-Wall-Lunt who are not known for their channel racing but when they set to it they can win just the same as they do on land. Fanciers think the partnership don’t compete across the channel but that is not the case, they are very good fanciers who can do it. This race was from Messac 383mls to their loft and they take the top 4 with vels of 1371/1334/1332/1330ypm, Ray did say there was a gap between their first and second birds but after that they dropped in much better. Their winner is a yearling chequer hen bred from the top stock cock “Lance” who is also the sire of the very good “Sweet 16” 3x1st fed’s. “Lance” is a g-son “Olyimpade 03” 2nd is with another chequer yearling hen being a full sister to the winner. 3rd is a blue yearling cock g-son of the “Box 9 pair”. 4th is a chequer hen daughter of “610” the best of the Leo Heremans. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th are all yearlings having their first race across the channel 383 miles, they also did well in the fed.

The Mid Cheshire Fed 59 members send 366 birds to Messac when the birds were liberated at 6.30am in a light east wind. 1st see photo and they are also 3rd 4th 5th go to the Acton Bridge winners Curtis-Wall-Lunt whose details you can see in the Acton Bridge section above. I think I am right is saying this is only the third time they have competed in a channel race with the Mid Cheshire fed, their previous races included them topping the fed and in the other they were brought back to a land race. Dave & Baz Mellor put up a good race finished 2nd after sending their birds with the Crewe Premier. Other club winners in the fed are, L Owen at Kingsway. S Herbert & Son Keith in the Rudheath club with W&P Brown topping the list over at Earlstown. Frank Speed won at Wrinehill with Anthony Evans doing likewise in the Middlewich FC. The winner in the Leigh club is F Dootson with Tyldesley being won by WJ Bradbury while J Marshall won the Hodnet club.

The Middlewich 5B had a land race when 8 members entered 73 birds that were liberated from Frome at 10am. This weeks red card goes to Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett with a yearling chequer cock recording a vel of 1388ypm. Alan Woodcock is 2nd after seeing home a 3yo blue cock on 1386ypm. W Wilson & Son are 3rd after clocking a 3yo blue cock on 1363ypm ahead of Mark & Heather Smith who are 4th with a chequer hen on 1354ypm.

The South West Cheshire Fed had two races staring with the race from Messac when 15 members set 69 birds that were liberated at 6.60am with the combine in a light East wind. Mr & Mrs Keith Lovatt topped the list after entering their birds in the Crewe West End. The feds other race was from Frome when 49 members entered 606 birds that were liberated at 10am in a light north wind. Crewe West End winners Mick & Wendy Mellor had a good race taking the top 3 positions. Mick Stockton is having a good season after winning the Greenbank club. Joe Glover won the Hankelow club while Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett topped the list in the Middlewich 5B. Dave Pritchard carries on his good season winning at Moulton with Hitchin & Horsfield doing the same over at Winsford.
