I don’t know how many remember but I wrote about the old Dordin cock of Derek Lawton who was in his loft with 3 old hens who were past it plus a 3yo. The old cock was feeling full of beans and sired a youngster at 20yrs old, he is still feeling that way because a year on he has another baby in the nest. Derek was sating that if there had been any younger cocks in the loft he would have thought another cock had been sneaking in and doing the job for the old cock but that is not the case because he is in only cock in the loft with three hens. One of the older hens died a few weeks ago but there are still two plus the 3yo who is happy to oblige the old man. We were saying that fanciers do tend to part with pigeons before they have finished their time but on the other hand are such old pigeons putting the stamina into their offspring. There’s no doubting the fact that the old cock has still got plenty of stamina.
The local clubs are doing much better this year and not all members are competing so let’s start with the Middlewich FC where 8 members sent 151 birds to Portland being liberated at 9am. David from the DJ&CJ Wilkinson loft is doing well topping the list this week with a 2yo dark chequer cock on 1422ypm, David went on to say that this is a Jan Aarden cross Stichlebaut. Dave & Linda Healey have started well and are in only their second weeks racing of the season taking 2nd & 3rd. They are a blue pied and blue both being yearling hens, looks as if they were covering the route together recording vels of 1420.6/1420.1ypm. This is another one of those occasions when you see that pigeons don’t need all those short races before they get towards the coast into the north west. These being in their second race and down to 181mls, most think they need 60 to 80ml races before they go to these races but once again that is not the case. 3rd goes to W Wilson & son who recorded a vel of 1417ypm after seeing home a red hen with their next in the clock also collecting the second share of pools with the first going to Dickens & Wilkinson. What I have noticed with this result is there are 4 hens in the first 5 positions, looks like a few are being prepared for the channel races. The club were racing with the Mid Cheshire fed where 74 members entered 1,356 birds in the Portland race which was a good race for the channel season. The other club winners are, Martin Williams from Crewe Premier who topped the fed. L Owen from Kingsway. S Herbert & son Keith at Rudheath. R & B Smith Earlstown. D Everill from Wrinehill. J Chadwick Leigh. R & D Gaskell at Tyldesley and J Marshall in the Hodnet club.
In the Middlewich 5B Yeovil race 9 members entered 128 birds that were liberated at 11.30am with the red card going to W Wilson & Son who clocked a 3yo chequer cock recording a vel of 1497ypm. They also collected the first share of pools with their second in the clock. 2nd & 4th go to Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett with two chequers the first a 2yo cock followed by a yearling hen clocking up 1494/1484ypm. David from DJ&CJ Wilkinson is 3rd after clocking a yearling chequer hen on 1491ypm, this being from an egg off the ever-present winning partnership of Curtis-Wall-Lunt. David was saying that this one is the nest mate to one of Craig’s at his home loft that has also won. The rest of the pools go to Mark & Heather Smith with a blue hen. The club race with the South West Cheshire Fed who were at Yeovil when 63 members sent 1,005 birds. Frank Speed from the Hankelow club topped the list with other club winners being Mick Stockton at Greenbank, Mr & Mrs Keith Lovatt in the Crewe West End. P & M Child at Moulton and H Bratt & Son Mel in the Winsford club.
