LES J. PARKINSON'S

NEWS-REPORTS-ARTICLES

The first race of the season with the NFC is always eagerly awaited because that is the real starting point for many fanciers who base their season on the longer races. In May you would think that the weather would be reasonable to race pigeons but that has not the case and we have had some pretty cold weekends. However the weather did not improve much by the time we got to this first NFC race of the season from Fougeres when the shorter droppers got the better of the day. No matter what races you compete in the weather is always going to suit someone and in the National we all accept that as a part of the club. The longer the pigeons were on the wing the less chance there was of a winner coming from the northern part of the club. The land pigeons were also having a tough time of it and they broke no records on their way home from Kingsdown here in the mid Cheshire area so the National pigeons had even less of a chance of good vels. There’s one thing about sitting here in the conservatory we can see the pigeons coming. So while I am waiting for the pigeons here in a nice warm conservatory I can also type these notes and I also watched the test match until 3pm and then Alan came round to watch the Blackpool v West Ham match. So with so much going on I was feeling like a nodding dog sitting in the back of a car my head was always on the move. As we were sitting here we were talking about the National and what a difference technology has made to the sport. The subject came up because I was skipping through from my emails to this article and the early times with the NFC and as Elizabeth has always said there is never a dull moment in this house. Anyway this was another tough day and word is that there were some easy club winners which is expected in such races. I like many more in the North west experienced better returns from the Fougeres race than we did in the club races. Later in the evening as I was watching the Chelsea match I could also see many pigeons going over and they were working until late in the evening. Even the late pigeons that we had were mostly slapping around on arrival as if they were just out for a little light exercise. They have forecast better weather ahead but as we know we won’t stake our life on it. For this race I watched the forecast on Friday afternoon and it gave plenty of sunshine from midday but that did not happen and I think race controllers were thinking that they were right, not the case. The big problem we have with having several of these races at this time of the year is it turns the pigeons into homers instead of racers.

North West Classic

The club recently had a meeting to put the last few details together for the season and decided that for each race the club are to guarantee the following prize money. 1st Open £100 and £200 per section being split 1st £100, 2nd £50, 3rd £30, 4th £20 and depending on birdage this is expected to be increased. There are still about 50 members who have not paid their subscriptions so I suggest that if you are one of those you sort it before names go to the RPRA. There was a race cancelled due to the early bad weather and at the moment the committee has no intention of replacing it at a later date. However they might look at this later in the year and if the prospects look good they might add another young bird race. With the club needing marking facilities at Middlewich the committee have as always supported the venture and are to help out with the finances. By doing this the club wills secure a part share in those facilities that they do need.

Mr & Mrs Albert Austin are in the r/u position on 1255ypm after taking the rubber off a Chequer Vandenabeele widowhood cock that ahs prized many times. O’Hare & Woodward are 3rd with a vel of 1232ypm after seeing a very good prize winning pencil Vandenabeele cock go through the ETS system. The other pools winner being Peter Atherton. The West Coast fed saw 59 members send 1009 birds to Monmouth with the liberation being at 9am in a North East wind. This was a good race for Blackpool Col winners Ron & Shirley Mott coming home 1st 2nd 3rd & 6th and collect the H Webster trophy with Thornton & Cleveleys winner Derek Pedley also having 3 on the result in 4th 15th 16th positions. Fleetwood HS winner J Stockton is 5th & 13th while the Staining club sees P & J Churchill collect the red card and are 7th fed. 8th 9th & 10th go to Kenny Cardwell with 11th 12th & 18th going to Paul Fisher & Son with fellow club member’s J Sanbury being 14th and Walsh Bros 17th. Fleetwood & Dist winners are Mr & Mrs Holloway & K Holloway and collect 19th with Mick Barlow taking 20th and the next two after clocking 3 in 3 seconds. There are five club winners missing out on the top 20 on fed result this week but no doubt they will appear on other results. They are Jones & Harrison in the Kirkham & Wesham club. Mr & Mrs Pearson at the Pilling Inv. P Fisher & Son top the list in the Queens Inv while JB Riley does likewise over in the Stalmine HS. The fed then went to Mangotsfield where 63 members entered 1169 birds to light up the sky at 10am in a North West wind. As I mentioned in the previous race for the fed those not reaching the fed result are not far away and that is the case in this race with the inform partnership of Jones & Harrison from the topping the list in the Kirkham & Wesham club. In fact seven different club winners took the top 7 positions in the fed with 2nd going to Pilling Inv winners Mr & Mrs H Pearson. 3rd goes to Thornton & Cleveleys winner Derek Pedley while Paul Fisher & Son clocked two close together 4th & 5th these being one for each of the two clubs they are competing in and they are the Queens Inv and the Staining HS, they are also 18th fed. Blackpool Col leaders are 6th ahead of J Stockton 7th 8th & 12th. Mick The Taxi Barlow is 9th & 13th while 10th sees J Grayson from the Stalmine HS on the list with 11th going to B Fisher. Kenny Cardwell was quick on the draw with three on the same minute to collect 14th 15th 16th fed. Mr & Mrs Reg Sarre are 17th, Walsh Bros 19th and Blane, Edge & Blane 20th fed. Just two missing out on the top 20 this week and they are J McLellan from the Fleetwood & Dist and Marton Village winner D Farrell. Just one more to bring the fed up to date and that is for the Poole race when 62 sent 1002 birds that were liberated at 7.30am starting in a South West wind turning into the North East. The partnership of Jones & Harrison are certainly having a good time of it collecting another red card plus 4th & 17th fed after entering their bird sin the Kirkham & Wesham club. Paul Fisher & Son top the list in the Staining HS with Mick Barlow being 3rd & 8th racing with the Blackpool Col. 5th goes to Walsh Bros followed by Stalmine HS winner J Grayston. Kenny Cardwell is 7th & 15th with Fleetwood & Dist winners Mr & Mrs Holoway & K Holloway being 9th fed. 10th is won by F Hanley ahead of S Watson 11th with Blane,Edge & Blane 12th & 16th. Queens Inv winners Paul Fisher & Son are 13th ahead of Ron & Shirley Mott 14th & 18th fed. Tom Roskell & Tom Williamson from the Pilling Inv are 19th just in front of Thornton & Clevelys winners Mr & Mrs Reg Sarre who complete the top 20 in the fed. Other wiknners ar Roy & Mark Acton in the Marton Village with Barnes & Walmsley topping the list in the St Annes HS. Both Middlewich clubs are now racing from the same transporter but have their own liberation time and in this race it was a hard race from Kingsdown. So we start with the Middlewich FC when the red card went to Mark & Heather Smith with a blue hen on 1138ypm. She was third the previous week so was on form and had 2 x 1sts in the NWCC last year so a good pigeon coming into form at the right time. 2nd & 4th go to DJ & CJ Wilkinson recording vels of 1137/1103ypm with the first for David being the very good Taveirne-Rigole “Chimney Cock” that has been a real good pigeon winning many prizes from club to National level this has been a star in the loft. Next in the clock is a Red cock collecting a second prize of the season and is from the lines of Taveirne-Rigole crossed with a grandson of  Red Barcelona these being the lines from Vandersanden. Dudley 7 Irene Niblett are keeping their team in amongst the prize winners collecting another card, this time 3rd on 1107ypm after seeing home a yearling Marcellis chequer cock that was 2nd as a young bird. In the Middlewich 5B the top two positions go to the vere present O’Hare & Woodward with vels of 1051/1044ypm after seeing home two Vandenabeele blue cocks. 3rd goes to Alan Woodcock also with a blue cock on 1016ypm followed by yet another blue cock racing to the lofts of Billy Wilson & Son on 1012ypm.
