I am currently running at near 500 spam mails each day so I only make a quick search therefore if you have sent an e-mail and not had an answer please contact me.

Problem

I hope that the sport sticks to what it should be doing and that is racing pigeons instead of sticking its nose in where it should not and then our racing will not be affected and you know what I am on about.

Racing

Now my kind of racing starts with the Nationals where we can send our birds across the channel into the North West. The only thing I will miss this year is talking to the National winners after each race however I do have more time to look after my own birds and more importantly sit there and wait for them without chasing the section winners for details. For too long I have been neglecting my own birds while covering the big races and even though I have enjoyed it has taken it’s toll on my race team. Having said that with jumping them as much as I have been the cream has risen to the top much earlier in life for the pigeons concerned. But and there is always a but, I wonder how many of those pigeons that have been thrown in at the deep end would have made better pigeons had they received a better introduction into what is expected of them as racing pigeons. There are always two ways of looking at everything and with talking to so many National minded fanciers I have perhaps unknowingly tried to rush the pigeons too much too early in their lives. In general a racing pigeon does not have a long life so we need to maximise what time they spend in the race team. Unless you have a big race team it takes quite a few years before you get a team with any age about them. Even now more or less three quarters of my team are yearlings that were not raced as young birds. I have joined the Minshull midweek club to send a few there in conjunction with the National races and even Clive Riley has taught me something on the ETS that will come in handy during the season. Things are getting easier by the race, let’s hope the pigeons also think the same way.

Club/Fed News

While most clubs are suffering Richard Young tells me that the Crewe West End are continuing to see an increase in numbers. In their first race of the season 24 members sent 320 birdsto Cheltenham when the birds were liberated at 13.15hrs. My mate from the Rolls Royce days Bob Humphries collected the first red card of the season when his winner recorded a vel of 1397ypm and he also picked up the nom of £33.00. Steve Parkinson is now racing the pigeons on his own again and not in a partnership collects 2nd position with a vel of 1393ypm. 3rd goes to Colin Lindoprecording a vel of 1393ypm while Mick & Wendy Mellor are 4th on 1392ypm. Stuart hart sent a few trainers in this one and recorded a vel of 1399ypm. The club then went to a second Cheltenham race when 25 sent 416birds with the red card going to Mick & Wendy Mellor who have flown a good pigeon over the years but this year Mick has Wilf Hart working with the pigeons. Mick was saying that his work does not allow him enough time with the pigeons so Wilf will be a great help. Both Mick and Wilf come from pigeon families so neither are fresh to pigeon racing and a good combination for the future. Anyway their winner clocked up 2011ypm. The next two positions go to Manley & Lloyd with Terry never too far away from the top of the list and this week records vels of 2007/2003ypm with his first bird also getting the nom of £34.50. That leaves 4th position to Bob Humphries on 1995ypm. Poynton RBLHS In the first race of the season 12 members sent 166 birds to Cheltenham approx 100 miles. Tommy Bradbury had an excellent day taking the first four positions in a light variable wind with vels 1412/1400/1399/1397ypm. His first bird was also 4th North Section, 14th Open Fed 193/3185 birds. All four birds were Janssen’s. The winner has previously won 6 X 1st Club & 1 X 1st Fed. The second race was again from Cheltenham with 12 members sending 170 birds. The birds were liberated in a NE wind but they made good times resulting in a very close finish. Tommy Bradbury took first & third positions vels 1392 & 1391.2 with two Janssen’s that have won and prized respectively. Mike Webb was 2nd vel 1391.6 With a Jos Thone that has won previously. Pete Stanway took 4th prize vel 1390 with a Van Reet cock that that has scored on many occasions and topped the Fed in 2008. The first three birds in Poynton also took the first three positions in the North Sect of Staffs Moorlands Fed. Now onto the Mid Cheshire Fed race from Kempsey when 1390 birds were liberated at 12.30pm in a Lt North East Wind after race controller Dave Healey gave the go ahead. You cannot keep a good team down and that was the case with the race after one of the best teams in the North West topped the list. Earlstown winners Bob & Brian Smith of Burtonwood had a good race coming home 1st & 3rd fed on 1441/1437ypm. Rudheath winner Derek Woodward cam in with 2nd & 16th ahead of K Parkinson 4th 5th & 20th fed. Royal Wires Don Risley is 7th while Middlewich winners O’Hare & Woodward finish 8th. W & P Brown had a good race coming home 9th 10th 11th with C A Baker 12th & 15th. The Weaverham club saw P & M Child take the red card with C Ingram 14th and Winsford winners Lionel & John Goostry 17th leaving 18th to Mr & Mrs Albert Austin and Ian Cooper 19th. Club winner’s not quite making the fed list this week are Mr & Mrs Geoff Bebbington over at Acton Bridge. Steve Parkinson with the Crewe Premier. Peter Atherton at Moulton. John Allbutt with the Sandbach club and Joe Glover tops the list at Wrinehill. In the Sandbach FC race from Cheltenham the top three positions all went to Peter Berry on 2127/2091/2084ypm with three widowhood cocks. The winner is a chequer cock that was 2nd at Kempsey in the first race of the season. Peter then took the rubber off a blue Staf van Reet cock out of the Allbutt stock followed home by a blue pied Wildersmerch cock. 4th goes to John Allbutt who saw home a blue Staf Van Reet w/h cock on 2081ypm. The latest Lymm FC race was from Cgheltenham when the birds were released at 12.30 in a South West wind. The first three positions went to Derek Woodward with his team of widowhood cocks recording vels of 2101/2097/2088ypm. The winner is a yearling blue cock off the Ad Schalerlaekens Gold Matterns and Sissi lines and was bred by Peter Fox. Derek then took the rubber off a yearling blue pied cock bred from a grandson of Gabby Vandenabeeles Wittenbuik x Sissi lines. Next in the clock is a 2yo Golden Gaby blue cock again off the stock from Peter Fox. 4th spot is filled by Alan Richardson the clubs evergreen clock setter with a Silver Shadow Van Loon widowhood cock on 2052ypm. Meanwhile over at Rudheath the birds went up at 12.15 and were also liberated in a South West wind at Cheltenham. Leading the pack was James Smith on 2074 and also 3rd doing 2043ypm. The winner is two yearlings being a chequer and a slatey off E Bentley from the Wirral, second in the clock prized in last years Bamfords Gold Ring race. 2nd & 4th go to Derek Woodward on 2067/2032ypm firstly with a yearling blue hen off the Picanol/Blue Diamond lines that was 1st club 2nd fed the week before. Derek then clocked a blue chequer yearling hen off the Kanibaal/Van Dyke lines. In the Middlewich FC the birds were liberated at Kempsey when the ever-present team of Mike O’Hare & Ron Woodward took the red card. This winner is a 2yo chequer hen that is a granddaughter of Amber Louise and TC from the Vandenabeele stock. Carol 7 Robert Carson took the next three positions with a blue and mealey cocks both from the loft of this weeks winner while their third in the clock is from the lines of Alan Groom and Alan Buckley. The were at Middlewich 5/10B were at Cheltenham when Dave & Lynn Healey came home with 1st & 4th after taking the rubbers off two 3yo FVW cocks these being a blue and chequer. Coming in between are O’Hare & Woodward who clocked a blue and chequer both 2yo Vandenabeele cocks.
