SOLWAY NEWS

By Jimmy Graham

W. Smith of Dumfries

The Solway Federation was down at Leyland on Saturday 24th April. The strings were cut at 11.15am into a light South-West wind and the convoy of 1754 birds sent by ninety-four members were on their way……

Leyland to Ecclefechan is around ninety-six miles so an e.t.a. was set for around 1pm. The leading birds recorded velocities well into the 1600’s.

Some fanciers had good returns while others weren’t so good but that’s pigeon racing for you, some you win and some you loose!

I myself sent thirty-six birds and had thirty-five on the day.

Langholm once again cleaned up with seven birds in the leading ten. Top spot went to R.V.Graham for the second week running on a velocity of 1669. Three birds into Springfield and one into Hoddam made up the Fed result.

Langholm F.C. 4/90

As I mentioned earlier, R.V.Graham took top spot here with his team in great form. Ralston took the leading six in the Club and Federation with velocities ranging from 1669 to 1656. The winner being a two year old Blue Cock.

D.Nordon took 7th Club, 8th Open doing 1633.

Springfield H.C. 10/168

Taking the Red and the Green this week is W.F.Van Nuil timing a yearling Chec on 1635. The winner also took 7th Open Fed. His third placed bird was doing 1601.

Raymond White with a three year old Cock takes 2nd Club, 9th Open on 1611. Following in 4th position are Mr & Mrs Gus Power & Allan doing 1585. D.P.Skelton takes 5th on 1580.

Annan H.C. 15/255

Here we find three of a drop, (two yearlings and a four year old) for the lofts of Crombie & Mechan. The birds homed in at 13.02.23, 13.02.35 and 13.03.16 with velocities of 1500, 1497 and 1487.

Looking at the result it looks like Stevie Fergusons bird must have been with them as his bird timed in at 13.02.23 to take 4th Club on 1487.

J.F.McCarton comes in 5th doing 1461. G.W.Cambell is in the list again with only four birds away, he takes 6th spot doing 1453. (Remember Pop was 3rd last week).

Well I’m afraid Angus didn’t win this week after all. There were seventeen birds in front of him! Third time lucky Angus, stick in there………

Hoddam F.C.   8/244

Winning for the second week running is Mr & Mrs J.Graham. This week I entered thirty-six birds and had thirty-five back on the day. The other one came back the following morning, so I’m pretty pleased with them all.

My winner this week was the Chec Hen that should have won last week but it was entered as a trainer then. So I guess she made amends this week……

I had a drop of two followed close behind with another four. In fact I had twenty-four birds home in fifteen minutes to take 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th Club with velocities ranging from 1609 to 1574. The winner is bred from a gift Cock from Ron Crook. The Dam is a direct daughter of “Little Margaret” the 2005 N.F.C. Pau winner for Lloyd & Kelly.

Eastriggs H.C. 13/259

Eastriggs Club this week had the biggest entry in the Fed with 259 birds away. The winners are the well known fanciers from Carlisle, the McMorrine Bros. They moved into the Solway Fed about three years ago. They timed two good birds to take 1st and 2nd Club with 1598 and 1549.

Next were Mr & Mrs Mark Goldie taking 3rd and 5th doing 1410 and 1385. Mr & Mrs Thomson take 4th doing 1401.

Brydekirk H.C.  9/184

R.J.B.Renwick (he likes the full title) timed four good birds to take 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th doing 1568, 1561, 1501 and 1499.

J.R.Halliday nipped in to take the 4th spot doing 1530, followed by J.M.Dalgliesh and Ewart Warwick.

Lockerbie H.C. 6/115

The Lockerbie Club score sheet went like this;

1st, 3rd and 5th was Kenny Thomson. 2nd, 4th and 6th Ewan Hind & Son. Their birds were doing 1566, 1545, 1504, 1489, 1481 and 1470.  Michael Currie away up in Moffat had the next three.

Nith Valley 6/67

Here we find W.J.Smith clocking the leading four birds into the Valley. He timed four yearling Hens to take 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Club, 1st, 8th, 9th and 10th Section doing 1605, 1506, 1501 and 1494. The winner for Smudger at 1605 was a very good bird on the day, the only bird to crack the 1600 mark, well done.

Dumfries S.C. 5/114

Lynn & Charteris had the leading two in the Social Club, timing a two year old Dark Chec Cock on 1572 followed by a yearling Cock doing 1569. They took 2nd and 3rd Section from 439 birds.

Dumfries F.C. 10/177

The Flying Club result was spread out this week with four members taking Section diplomas. The winner here for Douglas Owen is the same Chec Cock that won last week and took 5th Section. This week it moved up a point taking 4th Section and of course 1st Club on 1566 and it’s only a yearling.

Terry Richardson is 2nd Club, 5th Section on 1555.

G.Nicholson timed in to take 3rd Club and 6th Section doing 1512.

The best ‘brickie’ in Dumfries takes 4th Club, 7th Section doing 1509 and of course I’m talking about Mr.W.Swan.
