“The Original” Around The Up North Combine

By Good Corn

The final race of the Up North Combine 2019 racing season took part from young bird Wakefield on Saturday 28th September, the birds were scheduled to race from the Newark Showground but the very poor rain conditions the members were suffering at the home end held things up. As the morning worn on the fanciers were sure we were going to get a race that day as the weather at the home end was improving all the time, but as we got into the afternoon the weather started to deteriorate at the race point so Chief Convoyer Peter Maw decided to move the birds closer to home where he did get a liberation from Wakefield when Groups 1, 4 and 6 (East Cleveland Federation) were liberated at 1.40pm flying into a west wind which was going to push the youngsters on and achieve high velocities. Groups 2 and 5 (Teesside Federation) were up and on their way home 20 minutes later at 2pm.

Moving onto the Brotton 6 Bird Club where we see the partnership of Mr & Mrs Bob & Babs Moore return to their winning ways to record their third win of the young bird campaign. Bob & Babs who have flown a very good young bird for a number of years scored in all nine young bird races giving them a total of 3 x 1st, 4 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd, 1 x 4th, 3 x 5th and 1 x 6th Clubs. Frank & Brenda Reilly & son Wayne had a couple of their entries on the clock to lift 2nd and 3rd Club with their green card potter being the previous winner of 1st Club Newark Showground. Frank, Brenda & Wayne chalked in eight of the young bird races only missing out on the first race out of Bubwith (1) winning 3 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd, 2 x 4th, 3 x 5th and 2 x 6th Clubs. The Brotton H/S partnership of  Frank & Brenda Reilly & son Wayne have really hit top form the past two races for the trio won a brilliant 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th Fed Bubwith (3) the previous week out of 816 birds. This week Frank & Brenda & Wayne achieved their second winning performance on the belt after timing five of their squad to win an outstanding 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club with the red card winner knocking out a vel of 1654 for 20th Federation. Mr & Mrs Golly & Linda Peirson & Tubby Purver stopped the dry rub by taking 3rd Club.

Onto Skelton Green where two members entered 22 birds in the race with Tommy Welford timing three birds to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club; while Eion Richardson followed up his previous weeks winning performance out of Bubwith (3) where him and Tommy sent to time a trio of youngsters to chalk up 4th, 5th and 6th Club. Both Tommy & Eion are lifelong members of the sport with both fanciers enjoying their share of success over the years with much of their winning performances being achieved from over the channel. The two back-over races have given Tommy & Eion a chance to give their youngsters a couple of extra races. A lot of fanciers make the Maidstone National their last race of the season either because they believe their birds have had enough for the season or the babies are too far in the moult. At the end of the day fanciers are going to send if they want too, fanciers are not going to send their birds if they are not right.

Tommy Welford of Skelton Green winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club Wakefield.

Next stop is the Teesside Federation and starting at Haverton Hill where the loft of Jappa Appleton & Paul Longstaff timed four birds to win 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Club out of 30 birds to rack up their third young bird win of the season. With the lads red card winning blue cock achieving a leading vel of 1526 which was enough to pocket 8th Fed; while the duo's blue card potting blue card lifter making 1508 to claim 12th Fed. The inform Stuart “Lewie” Lewis, Amber & Coby McCabe had a couple of their entries in the points to take 3rd and 6th Club with the partnerships green card potter being a blue hen doing 1493 for 14th Fed.

Butto Bell & Weedall timed three of their six entries at the Billingham T U H/S to win 1st, 2nd and 5th Club from a Club entry of 19 birds to record Butto's second young bird win of the campaign with the well-fancied pole position cock achieving a vel of 1521 to go onto score 10th Fed and winning the Fed Nom. The very popular Butto who is a lifelong member of the sport blue card scoring cock racked up a vel of 1481 to pocket 18th Federation. Butto was the only Billingham T U H/S member to send to the first young bird race out of Pontefract (1) but he outwitted the rest of the Federation field to win a top-notch 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. 6th, 16th, 17th and 20th Federation from an entry of 289 birds with Butto's green card potter winning the Fed Nom. Steve Wilson had a couple of birds on the clock to pocket 3rd and 4th Club.
