“The Original” Around The Up North Combine
Fantastic Loft Performance From G Peirson MBE & Sons
By Good Corn
On Friday 30th August the Up North Combine weather committee voted 17 Federations to 3 to basket the birds for Oakham (2), some members I spoke to throughout the week had looked at Saturday’s forecast and like myself thought the basketing would have been put back 24 hours. Saturday morning came with the message coming through that there would be no word of a liberation until 9am and when that time came it brought the message of due to the forecast of rain moving into the flight path the next update would be 11.am and that followed the next update at 1pm.
The long wait and time moving on it was not looking good for a liberation that day and that was confirmed at 1pm when Chief Convoy Peter Maw held the birds over. Sunday 1st September brought a better day with Peter liberating Group 1 at 7.10am followed by Group 2 going up at 7.30am with Group 4 hitting the skies at 7.50am. Come 8.10 Group 5 were up and on their away home with the string cut and the flaps down on Group 6 at 8.30 flying into a light west wind. A number of fanciers commented on how well their birds returned from the race after the one-day hold-over giving credit to Peter Maw for caring for the birds.

The birds were at Chelmsford on Saturday 7th September when the East Cleveland Federations 31 members muster of 871 birds were liberated at 8.10am flying into a north-west wind. It was going to be a very testing race for the birds from the distance of 200 miles for this was the first time they have had to work for the previous races they were competing in light winds with the longest the winners had been on the wing was 2 hours 30 minutes. The jump of 70 miles would also play a big part on the Pigeons performances this week with the winds getting stronger as the day went on and the rain, they hit on the way up. A great deal of the fanciers was looking for the first arrivals after around four and a half hours on the wing for the 200 miles fly but the birds took 30 minutes longer.
We saw quite a few batches going over Skinningrove with some of the birds being out to sea flying just above the water while other were on the cliff corner with some going over the Steel Works where the work lads were waiting for the birds going over and letting the cannons off once they saw the flocks getting close. There were small batches of 5 to 6 but we also saw other flocks with up to 30 birds in them with some of them flying very tight together and going well in the middle of the valley, while others going over Loftus and Liverton Mines being more spread out and not going so well. We even saw two flocks which would have been the second liberation birds coming through Loftus and flying straight down the valley and going straight out to sea as far as the eye could see. Trevor McConnell got the binoculars out as he could not believe how far the birds went out to sea.
