Jimmy Reed has taken the Club by storm again this week for the lad wins the first five positions and the Club Nom at Marske & New Marske with his roundabout team to record this eighth win of the season so far. With top spot going to a yearling blue cock on 1724 for 24th Fed; the red card winning cock who took 3rd Club the previous week out of Chelmsford (2) when beaten by 2 loft mates is out of the late Jack Brown & Tony Hunt x Graham Jones of Guisborough bloodlines. The blue card was chalked up by a 2018 bred blue Vandenabeele hen bred out of Jimmy's own stock and making 1713 for 28th Fed; the hen is no stranger on the clock after winning 2 x 1st, 3 x 2nd and a 4th Club. Ali “ Mac” McLeod of Billingham T U H/S winner of 1st Up North Combine and the Queens Cup Roye.

After three nights in the race basket and a one-day holdover the Up North Combine Chief Convoyer Peter Maw liberated the convoy of 6,476 birds from the French race point Roye at 05.50 on Sunday 9th June flying into a light south-west wind. The Roye race was also the North of England Homing Union Queens Cup race. I’m over the moon to say Congratulations to my very good friend Ali “ Mac” McLeod of Billingham T U H/S who enjoyed a fantastic race after timing no fewer than six of his channel team to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club out of 42 birds, 1st, 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th and 19th Teesside Federation from an entry of 179 birds. With Mac's pole position winner that knocked out a winning vel of 1499.8 to go onto win 1st Section 5 from an entry of 1,174 birds and a outstanding 1st Up North Combine winning the “Northcliffe Trophy” the “Heron Memorial Trophy”, the “Stranton H/S Silver Pigeon Trophy”, the “Stan Hollis D Day Trophy”, a Combine Gold Medal and £100 kindly sponsored by Mr & Mrs Patterson. The Gold Medal winner named “JimmyJean” after Ali's late mother & father is a 2018 bred Vandenabeele hen who took a little over 7 hours 25 minutes to cover the 379 miles home. The hen who was in top-notch condition when I handled her a few hours after her top-drawer performance had netted before her Gold Medal winning performance after taking 3rd Club, 7th Fed Folkestone National where she was beaten by a couple of her loft mates who won 1st and 2nd Club, 3rd and 5th Federation. “JimmyJean” who is beautiful in the hand also chalked up 2nd Club, 6th Fed from the Belgian race point Ypres when she was beaten by a loft mate that won 1st Club, 4th Federation. She then went onto score 18th Fed out of Chelmsford (2) where she was beaten by eight loft mates, before her Combine win.

Butto Bell, Tommy Barron, James McLeod, Brian Atkinson, Ali McLeod, Keith Perkins, Paul Longstaff & Colin Atkinson of the Teesside Federation enjoying a celebration drink.

Onto the sire of “JimmyJean” who has more than proved himself on the road for he is the previous winner of 2 x 1st Teesside Federations, with him been bred from a full brother to the sire of Ali's 2015 1st Up North Combine Gold Medal Burbure winner “Gaby Lou” when there was 10,617 birds competing. The two cocks are from Ali's number one Koen Minderhoud hen he purchased from Mark & Dickie Evans way back in 2003, the mother of Mac's loft is the dam, g/dam and g/g/dam to hundreds of winners at Club, Federation and Section level from big birdage. The dam of “JimmyJean” is from Mac's 2017 breeder/buyer winner which I'm sure was run by the Tees Valley Federation, when £1,800 in prize money was won. He in turn is from Clubmates Brian Atkinson & Keith Perkins 1st Up North Combine old bird Folkestone (2) National Gold Medal winning “Ollie” in 2010 from a convoy of 17,366 birds, when paired to a hen he gave Brian & Keith from Mac's top racing pied cock the winner of an outstanding 2nd and 8th Up North Combine. Sire to Mac's top racing cocks “82” and “29” who have been mentioned in this column many times, paired to Mac's 3rd and 36th Up North Combine winning pied hen. This is Ali's third 1st Up North Combine winning performance after his Combine win with “Gaby Lou” in 2015 and his first 1st Up North Combine win in 1991 from the old bird Folkestone National with a 2y chequer Wildemeersch cock named “Little Grinni” out of a convoy of 22,375 birds when flying in the partnership of Ali McLeod & Keith Perkins who were a real force in their time together, two Pigeon men who know more than their share on Pigeons. Ali is always hard to beat with him been the highest prize-winner numerous of times over the years where he has been known to win all the Teesside Federation averages in the same season.

Family affair James, son Thomas & Ali McLeod

This season is no different to any other season for Ali for he has won 8 x 1st Clubs and 5 x 1st Federations so far and believe me his winning performances have not stopped here. The week before his Gold Medal winning performance, Ali won 1st Club, 1st Federation, 1st Section Chelmsford (2) from an entry of 3,272 birds. This 1st Up North Combine win proved to be very emotional for Ali as he remembered how his mam & dad supported him when he first started with Pigeons as a kid, the only thing missing from this fantastic achievement was his parents were not here to celebrate his fantastic win. Memories live on and naming his Combine winner “JimmyJean” was a very fitting tribute to his late parents Jimmy & Jean. Every top flyer has his doubters and knockers, but the outspoken Ali has had more than his share, even down to the rummer going around he refused “JimmyJean” to be drug tested. “JimmyJean” has been drug tested by the North of England Homing Union. I would like to thank Peter Bennett for the photo of “JimmyJean”.

The blue card was chalked up by a yearling blue P & D Lofts lines cock making 1460. with Jappa & Paul's next two timers, a yearling chequer hen and a 3y blue hen doing 1421 and 1408. The loft of Paul Gatley, Bob Harrod & son Dale had no less than five of their over the pond team on the clock to lift 2nd and 5th Club, 5th, 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th Fed, 67th and 117th UNC on 1456, 1439, 1403, 1402, 1393. Stewart “Lewie” Lewis, Amber & Coby McCabe nets 4th Club with a well-fancied yearling chequer hen on 1453 which was enough to win the Club £1 pool pocketing £27.00, 2nd £10 Club Nom lifting £60.00, 8th Fed and 2nd Fed Pools stashing away another £25.00 and 79th UNC. I always thought Lewie had trouble with moles on his allotment, but I later found out they were not mole hills around his loft, but mounds from where he's burying his money.

The blue card scorer was a yearling blue cock doing 1447 to net 4th Fed, 96th UNC, with the cock being out of Golly & Linda's good channel cock the winner of 6 x 1st Clubs which is a fantastic achievement. Third on the clock in the green card position came a 3y blue Van Loon cock bred by Evo and doing 1437 to pot 6th Fed, 125th UNC; while the yellow was claimed by a home-bred 1y blue hen doing 1422 for 12th Fed, 222nd Combine; and she was followed by a 2y chequer cock bred by Tubby's friend Nev and next on the clock was a 2017 bred blue cock to round off a fantastic race for Golly, Linda, Tubby, Eve & Frankie

Eion Richardson is a very popular winner at Skelton Green 5/61 after timing two of his entries to win 1st and 5th Club with pole position being won by a 2y blue pied hen bred by Kevin & Merv Brown and Sacker Cole of Brotton, with a top vel of 1457 the well out in front red card winning blue pied hen went onto score a brilliant 2nd Federation. Lifetime fancier Eion's second timer was a 2017 bred chequer hen from Kent through the old Busschaert lines, which have been good honest Pigeons for numerous of fanciers over the years. I was just thinking about Eion the other day of the times when he flew a very good channel bird in the 70s and 80s, he also won inland in them days but his channel performances have always stuck with me. I thought it strange of Eion winning after I had not long thought about his racing years, well done Eion it good to see you back in the winners' enclosure. Eion is in hospital at the moment so I wish him a speedy recovery.

Tony Bannister holding Eion Richardson's 1st Club, 2nd Fed, 62nd Up North Combine Roye winner.

With Kevin his father Merv and Sacker's red card winner being a 3y blue hen of Freddie Even-handed lines making 1397 for 23rd Federation; while the yellow card was netted by a Loftus Championship Club Breeder/Buyer purchase. It was good to see Sacker out and about after his very worrying time in hospital, it was unreal what Sacker has been through. I'm sure the East Cleveland Federation members wish Sacker a full recovery. Mr & Mrs Golly “Graham” & Linda Peirson, Tubby “Graham” Purver, Evo “Ian” Everington & Frankie Rolands are in 2nd spot with a 3y blue Graham “Watto” Wattis x John Soderlund & John Maddison hen. I have to say that Jan does very well to get to the birds every day as the lass is not in the best of health, I see often see Jan going to and from the loft on her mobile scooter, no matter the weather. Keith & Matty Arkless timed an Irish bred 2y to take 5th Club, 15th Fed on 1409 and they were followed by Jim & Julie Kelly who clocked a yearling doing 1399 for 20th Fed and round all a notable day’s performance in the Fed for the Loftus members.
