Not many races left for the old birds and for some I don’t think the end of the season can come quick enough. The old birds have had a rough time this year and the tough races has shown in the number of entries in the later races.

6 members of the Middlewich FC sent 77 birds to a comeback race from Cheltenham when Ron Woodward topped the list. Ron had intended to have the season off, but changes were made, and he started to race again with the result being this weeks red card. Ron saw home an Eric Couleman’s 4yo chequer w/h cock on 1967ypm. This one has previously won twice from across the water and is a gift bird from Malc Hewitt. Ron was also 3rd on 1942ypm with a 2yo chequer cock. 2nd goes to W Wilson & Son who saw home a blue hen recording a vel of 1957ypm. Syd Latham & Son & Daughter collect 4th after seeing home a 5yo blue cock on 1935ypm.

At Acton Bridge FC 6 sent 164 birds to Cheltenham when the top 4 positions went to Curtis-Wall-Lunt. The winner is a 2yr old chequer hen and is a daughter of “De 69” winner of 3 x 1st feds and is a son of their “Box 9 Pair” x “44” a granddaughter of “De Jan”. 2nd is with a yearling hen who topped the fed last season as a young bird and is out of “72” a direct son the “Box 9 Pair” hen dam “1359” is a granddaughter of “Olyimpaide 03”. 3rd is with a chequer yearling hen bred from a son of “Eurovision” and a daughter of their “Box 9 Pair” their last for this week taking 4th is a chequer yearling cock son of “Hercules” & “Deb”

The two clubs above were racing with the Mid Cheshire Fed when 66 members sent 945 birds to Cheltenham with Cutis-Wall-Lunt taking the top four positions. Other club winners in the fed are JJ Stewart at Kingsway. Dave Pritchard in the Rudheath Club. Ken & Stan Bosson win in the Crewe Premier. W & P Brown over at Earlstown. Joe Glover wins at Wrinehill and takes the top 3 positions. Ron Woodward and sidekick Mike won at Middlewich with J Chadwick doing the same in the Leigh club leaving R&D Gaskell wining the Tyldesley club.

In the Middlewich 5B 8 sent 61 birds to Frome when Alan Woodcock clocked a blue cock on 1795ypm to take the red card. Mark & Heather Smith are 2nd & 3rd recording vels of 1750/1744ypm with Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett 4th on 1702ypm.

The South West Cheshire fed saw 49 members enter 565 birds in this Frome race when the birds were liberated at 15.25pm in a south west wind. Tommy Hulme & Son topped the list racing with the Greenbank Club. Rob Bennett won in the Crewe west End. Brian Heath wins the Hankelow club while Colin Bell topped the list in the Moulton club. That leaves the Winsford club where Richard Ormandy took the red card.

Hi Les, Interesting to read your comment on Geoff Bebbington’s late breds flying 123 miles untrained with good returns. Over the years I have found only a very tiny percentage of late breds are any good and the majority are lost first time they are raced. This year I trained 4 and have one survivor that took 2 weeks to home from its first race. I have tried all sorts of different systems with late breds with little success. I would love to know how Geoff does it. Regards. BB.”

My best ever distance pigeon was August bred and as a yearling went as far as Rennes with one member saying “If that one beats me I’ll pack up. In the race on the Saturday 352mls he did beat his experienced team but didn’t pack up and I wouldn’t have wanted him to. That cock had a good constitution and he was only a pint pot size but was raced until he was 10yrs, he just wanted to fly.
