Jackson and Mellor of Widnes

JACKSON & MELLOR

OF WATERLOO LOFTS (WIDNES)

THIS IS A FOUR MAN PARTNERSHIP THAT INCLUDES JAMES JACKSON SENIOR & HIS SON JAMES JACKSON JUNIOR, JAMES MELLOR & HIS SON GRAHAM.

THE PARTNERS, AFTER 40 + YEARS OF FLYING AGAINST EACH OTHER, DECIDED IN 2007 TO JOIN FORCES, BOTH HAVING WON IN THEIR OWN RIGHT MANY TOP PRIZES INCLUDING WIDNES CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB, WIDNES JERSEY CLUB, WHISTON 3 B CLUB, RAINHILL 2 B CLUB, LONGTON 2 B CLUB,  SOME OF THESES 2 B CLUBS MANY TIMES OVER, EVERY FEDERATION RACE IN THE CLUB'S PROGRAMME, SOME AS MANY AS 20 TIMES OVER, PLUS 4 X 1ST COMBINE RACES - ALL CHANNEL. DURING THE LAST TWO SEASONS THE PARTNERS HAVE WON 6 OUT OF 10 CHANNEL RACES WINNING MANY TOP FEDERATION/COMBINE WINS UPTO 7000+ BIRDS, ALSO WINNING TOP 3 POSITIONS IN 3 OF THE (4) 2 BIRD CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS RACES THIS YEAR 2010.

THE PARTNERS FLY ON AN ALLOTMENT AND FLY TWO SEPERATE SYSTEMS - WIDOWHOOD AND NATURAL/ROUNDABOUT, AND HOUSE 16 PAIRS OF EACH. THE WIDOWS ARE PAIRED EARLY FEBRUARY AND RACE THAT SYSTEM TO THE END 500 MILES.

THEY ARE FED A MIXTURE OF THREE/FOUR TOP WIDOW MIXES BLENDED TOGETHER AND THEY CARRY ENOUGH TO LAST THE WHOLE SEASON. RED BAND CONDITIONER IS ALSO USED WITH PEANUTS, FRESH GRIT/MINERALS WEEKLY.

THE PARTNERS TRY TO VARY THE METHOD AS THE SEASON GOES ON, SOMETIMES SHOWING THE HEN, SOMETIMES NOT, SOMETIMES JUST THE NEST BOWL OR EVEN JUST ONE FLIRTY HEN LEFT TO AROUSE THE COCKS AS REQUIRED. THEY ARE TRAINED AS THE FOSTER YOUNGSTERS ARE BIG IN THE NEST MID MARCH WEATHER PERMITING. THIS IS JUST FOR A FEW WEEKS, THEN THEY ARE WORKED TO THE FLAG FOR UP TO 1 HOUR MORNING/NIGHT AND IF THEY SEEM A BIT SLUGGISH SOMETIMES A MIDWEEK RACE OF ABOUT 70 MILES IS USEDTHE HENS WILL STAY WITH THE COCKS ANYTHING FROM 15 MINS-4 HRS DEPENDING ON THE RACE THEY HAVE HAD.

FOR THE LAST CHANNEL RACE 500 MILES THE BIRDS ARE PAIRED AND GO TO THE RACE THAT WAY. THEY ARE ALLOWED TO STAY TOGETHER UNTIL THEY HAVE PART REARED A YOUNGSTER  JUST TO TRY TO GET THEM BACK INTO A NATURAL CYCLE THEN PARTED.

THE NATURALS ARE PAIRED MID /LATE FEBRUARY. IN THE EARLY PART OF THE YEAR FEB/MARCH THESE ARE WORKED MORNING AND NIGHT TO THE FLAG TO BUILD UP READY FOR THE RACE SEASON INCREASING FOR 30 – 60 MINS AS THE WEEKS GO BY. THEY ARE PAIRED TILL THEY LAY AND SIT UP TO 10 DAY EGGS THEN ARE PARTED AND FLOWN ON THE ROUNDABOUT SYSTEM TILL THE BIRDS REACH THE COAST 200 MILES. THEN THEY ARE RE-PAIRED AND RACED NATURAL RIGHT THROUGH TO 500 MILES. THE FEED FOR THESE BIRDS IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN EARLY SEASON. THEY ARE FED A GOOD WIDOW CORN AND AS THE SEASON PROGRESSES PEAS AND SEASONED QUALITY TIC BEANS ARE SLOWLY ADDED. THE NATURALS ARE TRAINED MORE OFTEN AND THE HENS WILL BE SENT TO THE MIDWEEK CLUB TO KEEP THEM MOVING READY FOR THE CHANNEL RACES, NORMALLY 6 IN THE WIDNES FED AND 4 IN THE CHESHIRE PLAINS FED. ALL THE NATURALS ARE EXPECTED TO FLY 2/3 OF THE RACES ON THE CHANNEL INCLUDING YEARLINGS.

THE PARTNERS HAVE SEARCHED ALL OVER EUROPE TO ATTAIN THE VERY BEST AND HAVE SPENT MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS IN DOING SO.

ABOUT 80 YOUNG BIRDS ARE BRED. THE TRAINING BEGINS WHEN THEY ARE FLYING AROUND THE LOFT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. THEY ARE STARTED AT 5 MILES AND WILL GO TO 60 MILES BEFORE THE FIRST RACE TRAINED 4/5 TIMES PER WEEK. THESE ARE FED  LIGHT CARB FEED AM AND A GOOD SOUND MIX IN THE EVENING. A LITTLE BIT OF SEED IS GIVEN ALONG WITH FRESH/GRIT/MINERALS.

TREATMENT IS GIVEN AS REQUIRED AND FROM DAY ONE THE Y/BS ARE FLAGGED EVERY DAY FROM 30-120 MINS.

THE BIRDS THE PARTNERS RACE AT THIS TIME ARE JANSSENS AND GABY VANDENABEELES, WITH A FEW GOOD DISTANCE BIRDS FROM COLIN LLOYD OF CANNOCK.

THE PARTNERS WOULD LIKE TO THANK BRIAN MORRIS FOR HIS HELP AT THE LOFTS.
