Top Class Season For Paul & Dan Burniston
By Good Corn
On Saturday 7th November the Redcar Central Flying Club, who are members of the very strong North Yorkshire Federation who compete in the Up North Combine, held their 2015 prize presentation evening at the Redcar Citizens & Priory Club. The Flying Clubs very hard working secretary Ged Hampson had asked me to present the Clubs silverware when we bumped in to each other in the Winter Gardens while attending the British Homing World Show Of The Year. I took my ever present Grandson Hayden, my Sister Shirley and her friend Chrissie along for the night. It was great to see a very good turn out and that is often due to a very good run Club, there were fanciers from the Feds other six Clubs there in attendance. Ged kicked the night off by welcoming everyone to the Clubs payout and then gave a rundown on the racing season in which the Redcar fanciers enjoyed a brilliant season in the Fed and also achieving a 1st Up North Combine Gold Medal winning performance. There are19 flying lofts in the Club with a total of 7,425 birds sent in 2015, that’s around 700 birds up on 2014. The Club paid out £1,343.00 in pool money, an extra £145.00 was paid out in National prize money. The Club charge £1.00 a bird for the inland National races, £1.50 for all channel races except Bourges where it is £3.00 per bird. If there is excess birdage it’s paid out on the National race, equally to the first 5 positions. The Club paid out £980.00 in point money on the night, with 5 points for a win, down to 1pt for 5th; the 6th to 10th don’t get points but are paid £1.00 per position. Ged asked me up to present the fantastic array of silverware to the very worthy winners, Brian Maude of Maude & Son who had won Bourges many, many times over the years which included winning the first 3 Club positions a number of times over the years left the sport at the end of the 2014 racing season. As Brian had won Bourges more often than not which led to many Federation wins and achieving a number of top UNC positions and performances, it was the continues outstanding loft performances that made him one of the best ever Bourges flyers, the members have renamed the Bourges Trophy after the Bourges expert and asked Brian to do the honours in presenting the Trophy to this year’s winners. After the silverware and prize money was presented; along with the Roy “Chubby” Brown Show Race Trophy that was won by K & M Walton of Guisborough and prize money which featured Mr & Mrs Steve & Chris Rowe in the result, it was time for the male and female singing duo to take to the stage to provide a top class performance. The excellent buffet that had everything and I mean everything followed, after the outstanding raffle Bob McGillicuddy took centre stage to do a great job in auctioning a few 2016 young birds. Then it was time for the duo to perform their second spot which was just as good as their first stint, the Sister of the female singer took to the stage to join the duo to sing a few numbers, everyone in the room really enjoyed a fantastic night. When you have attended a Redcar Central Flying Club presentation evening it’s easy to see why the Clubs fellow Fed members attend the event, and it’s not to get away from Andy Ward for the night because he was there with them Lol, only joking Andy. I wish to thank the members for inviting me along to present the prizes, a presentation that had it all, well run, fantastic support, good company, cracking raffle, top entertainment and a first class buffet. Thank also for Carole’s bouquet of flowers and my gift voucher, I wish you all a fantastic Christmas, a healthy and peaceful New Year and a winning 2016 racing season.

Now for the roll of honours list for 2015 which saw the partnership of Preston & Mooney notching up 7th Club, 19th Fed out of young bird Newark (2), New starter Blaine Hall was the winner of the “Novice Cup”, I wish Blaine well in the sport and hope it’s not too long before he achieves his first win. The loft of Allen Hall who has flown a notable Pigeon in the past was the potter of 1 x 5th Club and1pt with that being achieved at old bird Peterborough (3). George Belski also notched up 1 x 5th Club and 1pt, with George netting his single point at Lillers. The loft of A Gibson chalked up 1 x 4th Club and 2pts, a notable 6th Club, 6th Fed from taken from young bird Selby (1) and that was followed up by pocking 34th Fed out of Newark (2). The lad was in the points at the Maidstone National when 4th Club was netted when the yellow card potter went on to claim 32nd Fed. The 2y chequer cock was bred by the late Andy Douglas of Northumberland and purchased for a very cheap £35.00 at the NEHU charity sale. I had the pleasure to meet and talk to Andy, a true Gentleman who is greatly missed, it’s a shame Andy passed away before Neil & Steve’s outstanding achievement. The winning cock was the only bird clocked in the 3 day race time in the Club and only one of two timed in the Fed, with the other bird being a 5y owned and raced by Robinson & Trainer of Grangetown who won 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 30th UNC, there was only 71 birds recorded in the Combine at the end of the third day. Bob worked shifts and I was a day fitters mate, whenever Bob was on the 6 till 2 or 2 till 10 shift we always had time to talk Pigeons, along with Colin Widdowfield who flew at Ormesby at the time, Bob Boag of Guisborough was a fitters shift foreman and he would also often drop by for a chat. I bought a Toulet clock off Bob who was the Dormanstown secretary at the time, he also gifted me a few old birds to help me restart racing. It’s always nice to think back on the good old days, the times were very much different from what they are now. It was great to have a chat to Bob who is in his 80s, about our times at I.C.I.

Looking through the North Yorkshire Federation results, Redcar Central Flying Club has held its own in 2015 with 3 x 1st old birds Fed wins. The sky was the limit for the Redcar lads with the young birds where they won an awesome 6 x 1st Fed wins from nine young bird races, no matter if the wind was blowing up hill or blowing down dale the lads still topped the Fed charts and also backed up the Fed wins with a number of 2nd, 3rd, 4th Feds. I did take some photos of the other North Yorks Fed fanciers that I will publish in another report. I have added a photo of the two ladies who were sat with Mick Preston & Trevor Maltby and the photo of the lady and the lad who were in the Ged Hampson group, both photos were taken by Hayden. For future presentation nights it will be a case of “watch out, Hayden and the camera are about”.
