BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION - 09-06-23

BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION

Mr & Mrs Clamp & sons of Swadlincote Town defy the odds to take 1st Fed Newton Abbott.

Saturday June 3rd saw 49 members from 9 clubs enter 651 birds for the first visit to Newton Abbott of the season.

A poor birdage this week, I presume the birds that went to Carentan the week previous with the MNFC and NMCC were kept at home? Add to this the losses and injured birds from the previous 2 weeks out of Honiton; and this persistent north east wind; I think some members were being careful with their teams and not sending the full quota?

We’ll have to see what the birdage is like the coming week from Yeovil, let’s hope it improves?

Alys cut the strings at 09-20 in a north east wind, turning east north east as they got nearer to home.

Well, I think most people if not everyone; made the Hill Ridware Lofts favourites for this race with the easterly wind, but there were two excellent birds that defied the odds to get in front of the Rugeley lads.

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Clamp & sons of Newhall, flying with Swadlincote Town into South Derbyshire; on taking 1st fed on 1265 with a home bred yearling blue Vandenabeele cock, a great winner, well done.

End of an era

I am sorry to sign off this week’s article with some very sad news. The legend Edward (Eddie) Froggatt sadly passed away at his home in Abbots Bromley on June 6th.  Edward was a life vice president of his beloved National Flying Club.  Along with his beloved wife Julie; they were great workers for the N.F.C.

Edward was a great flier especially when it came to the channel races; his favourite race was from Pau. Edward put up many fantastic performances with the National Flying Club from every racepoint, I remember doing a loft report on Edward for the BHW many years ago, the first thing that took my eye was a loft coat and a pair of jeans on a coat hanger, blowing in the wind in the entrance to the loft in the converted barn. Edward said “it’s so my birds are always use to seeing someone with the loft coat on in the loft at all times”; but added; “I wish he’d help with the cleaning out, he can’t use a scraper”.  I also remember him saying to me, “see that young mealy hen there, she’ll fly well from Pau when she’s a bit older” and you know what, she did.

Being a farmer, Edward was a great stockman, and proof was in the pudding.

Edward was very much a family man; a proud man; and respected by many throughout the uk.  On behalf of all the members of the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation I offer my sincere condolences to his wife Julie; his four children; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

God bless Edward, rest in peace.
