C&D SMYTH & SONS WIN TALBENNY DERBY
The East Down Combine’s Cross Channel Derby race was flown on Monday 2nd of September instead of Saturday 31st of August as all organisations had to wait until the weather was suitable for a channel event and as can be seen this turned out to be a wise decision with the leading birds making over 1300ypm in the SW wind from a 7.50am liberation . Entries were down this year reflecting the uncertain weather which had been experienced over the last few weeks .
Leading the field with a blue pied Busschaert cock was the Ballylesson team of C& D Smyth & sons recording a velocity of 1386 ypm and giving them their 3rd Open win of the season and again they were 1st West section . Colin & Dorothy were also 29th Open with their second bird 2nd open and 2nd West section and also from Ballylesson were K & B McConaghie & son who have already won this race on 4 previous Occasions and had this year a further 3 birds in the result at 15th ,19th and 20th open .
At 3rd open it was the Dundonald partnership of Rob Cowan and George McCartney who enjoyed a really super race with no less than a further 5 birds in the result at 5th ,10th 11th ,16th & 30th Open and this is a loft in super form for they have just won the first of the Skibbereen Derbies flown the following weekend and which will be reported on more fully in the next article . The first bird in the East section at 6th open was to the Killyleagh Central loft of R Watson & son ,with Millisle’s Jackie Rankin 2nd East Section at 9th open and Cloughey’s Gordon Bros & sons 3rd East Section 12th open .

The 2 bird club has once again this year provided very keen competition and the skill of a number of lofts that get both their entries in the prizes shows how well they know their birds . From the 2nd Thurles lofts achieving this were Gordon Bros & Sons , B Hogg & Family and Harper & Young whilst from Talbenny it was the lofts of John Patterson, & Cowan & McCartney .
The next race was the Skibbereen YB Derby .
