EAST DOWN COMBINE

1st & 2nd Open Thurles to Jim Newell (Annalong)For the 3rd race of the 2019 Old Bird season the East Down Combine were in Thurles on the week end of April 27th and you will recall that that was the weekend that storm Hannah arrived in Ireland with the Southern Ireland being most affected. This being the case some lofts opted to miss this one as although the birds left on schedule on Friday night the initial forecast for Saturday did not look very hopeful for a liberation ,certainly not before lunchtime and all credit to the race committee for their devotion to the task and as the morning wore on they became more hopeful that the storm which had passed would move away to the East allowing a good clearance although there was a fresh WNW wind in its wake . By 2.30 it was suitable for a liberation and the birds were up and away and as the results show the Race Controller and race Committees decision was fully justified although I would not have wanted to be the one having to make that decision.Two birds together for 1st and 2nd Open to Jim Newell of Annalong on 1601 with a 3rd bird on 1577 for 5th open. Both 3rd and 4th open were also into Annalong to John Trimble & son and John McCartan respectively and these were the top five in the East section. For 6th & 7th Open it is across to the East Coast of the Combine to Cloughey’s Harper & Young who have two on 1568 ypm . The West section was won at 8th open by Crossgar’s McCartan & Woodsides and they were 2nd West Section 10th Open with their 2nd Bird with Ballylesson’s John Patterson 3rd West Section 12th open.
