1st Open Thurles for David Hamilton (Bangor)

For the 5th Young Bird race of the season the East Down Combine were in Thurles and with suitable weather conditions the birds were in the air on Saturday August 18th at 9am and with a South West wind blowing it was going to be speedy with the winner averaging 66mph for the journey and again this week it was to a member of the Bangor Club ,David Hamilton with a velocity of 1943 ypm ,2nd Open was the Open winning loft of the previous week, Bangor’s Lambert & Stewart and it was then over to Dundonald for 3rd open to Mark Foulis .At 4th it was Mrs E Wynn & dtr .of Downpatrick Premier and then the next 5 birds were to two Dundonald lofts those of Brown and McConnell and B.C.T.Foulis & Gill with Newtownbreda’s B Hogg & sons completing the top ten . Both sections were represented in the top ten with the East section having three of the first 4 in the Open. Full open and section result was :

Good selecting on the part of Roy Irwin, B.C.T.Foulis & Gill ,Jim Young & ptnrs all of whom had both their birds in the 2 bird result and good to see Jay Muir ( Muir & McCann--Bangor )in at 8th with the bird which took 2nd club that day and just missed out on a Combine place .

This week the Combine moves on to Fermoy and by now all members should be aware of the programme reschedule with the Talbenny YB Derby moving from 1st to the 8th of September so it will now be flown on the same date as the 1st Skibbereen YB Derby and not on the day of the2nd Thurles which will now stand alone next week .
