R Strain & son win St. Malo OB Derby

The East Down Combine Old Bird Derby was flown from St. Malo on the weekend of June 24th /26th with the birds being released at 6.15am into a WSW wind . The winning loft this year is that of Raymond & Michael Strain of Millisle who timed a 2 year Old Jan Lootes hen . This hen was bred for this type of racing being a full sister of “Glen bank Lass” the Jan Lootes hen which won this race for Raymond and Michael in 2012 .

The Jan Lootes originated from a bird from Michael Ferris of Donaghadee and this year’s winner was sent to all races down Ireland then stopped and paired in readiness for the St. Malo Derby during which time she had two training tosses with Tommy Cairns from Balbriggan and went to St Malo feeding a 7day old Youngster and interestingly France was her first ever race from across the water a great performance Many congratulation to Raymond and Michael on their success in what was to prove a testing race .

Staying out on the Ards Peninsula in 2nd place are the Portavogie father &son partnership of Ronnie and Jim Young who have another bird recorded at 16th and from their entry of 3 had their 3rd bird return just out of race time on the 4th evening . The Young’s first bird was a 2year old blue hen which flew the Quimper Friendship National in 2015 just finishing outside the prizes .This Year this hen had 4 Irish races including the Skibbereen Derby and the Derek Wishart Fermoy race ,this was followed by 2 or 3 training tosses per week from Castlewellan and she then went to St. Malo sitting 12days and this was only her 3rd time ever across the water. The breeding of this hen is a cross between birds the partnership have from Keith Mott and birds from Jack Hughes which Ronnie & Jim obtained when Jack, who is Ronnie’s brother in law, had to give up the birds for health reasons after racing himself very successfully for many years and the bloodlines that Jack raced originated from Jimmy Anderson (Cullybackey) .

Jim & Ronnie’s 2nd Bird is also a 2year old blue hen and is a niece of the first hen and breeding and preparation was exactly the same as for their first bird and St.Malo was only this bird’s 2nd time over the channel .

In 3rd spot is Crossgar’s Gerard Adair who also recorded 2 birds home

With the second one finishing at 15th and I hope to have details on these shortly .

As can be seen from the result this was a difficult Derby ,congratulations to all who recorded arrivals . In addition to the Youngs and the Adairs the Ballynahinch lofts of W Hayes & son and W Catherwood & sons also timed in two birds each in the result . The full result of the Derby is :

The St. Malo Old bird Derby sees the last Old Bird race in The East Down Combine Old Bird Programme for 2016 with the Combine Young Bird racing scheduled to start on July 16th from Navan with the weeks In Between being for the Two INFC French nationals, The King’s Cup and the Friendship National and good flying to all competing in these events.
