2015 FANCIERS OF THE Year win 2016 Skibbereen Classic
The winners of this year’s Joe Ringland Skibbereen Classic were the Dundonald partnership of Cowan & McCartney who are the holders of the title EDC Fanciers of the Year 2015 .
From Skibbereen the birds had to fly into a light NE wind and the velocities reflect this with velocities in the 1300’s. Liberation of the 1062 birds took place at 9.30am on Saturday 14th May and it was a beautiful afternoon to wait on their arrival.
The winner is a blue yearling hen racing Roundabout and was bred for the partnership by fellow club member Roy Irwin and she had been 2nd club to the BCT Foulis & Gill partnership the previous week from Thurles
.
In 2nd, 3rd 4th &5th places are the Cloughey partnership of Harper & Young , who were 1st and 2nd in this race last year and in fact last year’s winner was their 3rd bird this year . All four birds are blue hens the bird at 2nd Open being a yearling hen who is flying outstandingly well having been in the Combine Open result in 5 of the 6 races flown this year to date and again this is a loft which is on the Roundabout system and the breeding of this bird is Bob Donaldson and Alfie Hawthorne. Their 2nd bird at 3rd open was 2nd Open from Pilmore Beach last year and her nest mate won the Combine from Penzance last year and the breeding here is Donaldson and Alan Kelly .At 4th open is the hen that won this race last year and she is from a Bob Donaldson cock paired to a Stephen Gore hen the family being van Dork. The hen at 5th open is off a Steve Gore Cock, mainly Ceuster and this is her 4th time in an Open result . The partnership’s great friend John Adair does the training for this partnership and the results speak for themselves.
Both this loft and that of Gordon bros & sons are having outstanding season and we stay with the Cloughey club for the next three places which were won by Gordon Bros & Sons ,at 6th Open it is a blue cock which was 4th open Skibbereen Classic in 2015 and has been 11 times in the EDC open, breeding is Gaby Vandenabeele/Sheldon Leonard. In 7th Open is a cock which has been 5 times in the open this season from 6races. He has been 3rd, 7th,13th,23rd,26th open. His breeding is Wynants The partnership have another Wynants cock at 37th open and again this one has already won 5th open 1st Thurles & 5th open Fermoy.
The top ten was completed with two to Bangor’s Reggie & David Moore who have won all races in the club so far this season as well as having a great season in the 2 bird club more on them shortly . The full result was :

Two weeks prior to the Skibbereen Classic the EDC were in Fermoy for the 4th race of the season and the birds were released at 10.15am into a light West wind and again it was the lofts of Gordon bros & sons and Harper &Young who took the top places in the open with Gordon bros & sons 1st & 5th and Harper & young 2nd ,3rd &4th .
The open winner ,a cock was also 5th open Tullamore. Breeding is A&L Painter de Meyer . The first 12 birds in the open were all in the East section and Downpatrick Premier’s Jackie Crossan had three of these together for 8th ,9th and 10th Open .
Crossgar’s McCartan & Woodsides have the first two in the West section at 13th and 19th open and again this was an excellent race .

We end this week with the sad news of the death of another of the Combine’s stalwarts Tommy Horner who raced very successfully in the Crossgar club and we extend deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.
This weekend the EDC is back in Fermoy followed by the First of this year’s INFC Nationals scheduled for the following Tuesday and it will be flown from Skibbereen.
