Combine Moot Raises £2,500 for Cancer Fund

It was back during the racing season that Dorothy Smyth mentioned to me that she was thinking of asking the Combine Committee if she could organise a fund raising event for the Cancer Centre at the Belfast City Hospital and as I had spent most of the summer of 2014 attending daily for treatment for Prostate Cancer I was naturally delighted that she intended to bring this to the attention of the EDC Committee for their approval which they readily gave as many of the pigeon fraternity had occasion, like myself, to benefit from the City Hospital’s care .

The date was arranged for Friday 23rd October and the venue was Magee’s Lounge in Crossgar and the night turned out to be a very successful fund raiser with the room filled to capacity. The following is a personal word of thanks from Dorothy to all concerned for making the evening a success.

 

“A special thank you to all who donated pigeons for the sale, all the buyers and a special thank you to the panel, Sid Collins”. Roy Irwin, Trevor Griffiths, and the very capable and knowledgeable chairman Wesley Sawyers, who also conducted the sale of birds in a very professional manner, also a special thank you to John & Dean Kirk, Francey Gilmore and anyone else who contributed to making the night such an outstanding success, not forgetting John Hollinger who although not feeling the best attended with the PA system

The final total raised of £2.500 was made up from entry charge ,sale of birds and very generous donations from fanciers and friends .This cheque will be presented to Professor Joe O' Sullivan from ‘Friends of the Cancer Centre’ , Belfast City Hospital at the East Down Combine dinner in the Millbrook lodge on Friday 20th November”.

We all thank Dorothy for the tremendous amount of work that she put into organising this evening, from obtaining birds for auction, to making the sandwiches for the supper, none of us probably know just how many hours she spent in organising this event, workers of this calibre are hard to find so Dorothy just to let you know it was greatly appreciated .

Ballywalter Pigeon Show

The Ballywalter pigeon club will be staging a show in the Portavogie Clubhouse on Saturday the 21st November 2015. Sam Regan writes “Our ageing wooden club needs very urgent repairs and we are trying to raise some funds, so as much support by you, the pigeon fraternity would be greatly appreciated. Four classes all handling are Old Hens, Old Cocks, Young Hens, Young Cocks. Penning from 12.30 to 2.00pm start. Prizes for each class and the best pigeon in the show. Bar facilities all day so come along and enjoy event”.
