Mallow - August 2014

For the 6th Young Bird race of the season on August 23rd the East Down birds moved on to Mallow some 215 miles to Bangor and again the weather favoured a Saturday liberation and with a west wind, albeit lighter than the previous week, the birds were away at 9.25 am. The fact that the wind was not so strong is reflected in the lower velocities with the leading birds this week in the 1300s, a considerable reduction on the previous week’s 1800 plus result. Having said that, the leading birds are again on the line through Annsborough to the coast at Cloughey.

For a second time in as many weeks it is Annsborough’s Mickey Croskery with 1st and 2nd open, closely followed by Gordon Bros and sons and these take the top 5 places in the east section. Crossgar club have the top 6 in the West section with Sam Duke having the first of these, McCartan & Woodsides 2nd, 4th and 6th and Alex and Anne Cheevers 3rd and 5th. Harper and Young Return to Winning Ways

For the fourth race of the young bird season the East Down Combine were in Tullamore. Amalgamation winners sees a return to winning ways for Drew Harper and Martin Young with another top performance taking the first five in the Peninsula Amalgamation and 4th to 8th open in the Combine with their excellent team of youngsters. The Gordon Family were close on their heels with a total of eight pigeons in the result, to see the Cloughey club dominate the race. The entry saw 37 members sending 1221 birds to the race.

Full result: 1st to 5th,9th. Harper & Young 1827, 1824, 1823 x 2, 1822, 1821.

6th to 8th, x 10th to 14th. Gordon Bros & sons, 1821 x 3 1820, 1817, 1814, 1811,1810.

TERENCE ADAIR Memorial Breeder Exchange Result

The first ever flying of the above event took place on Saturday the 9th August 2014 with the race being flown in conjunction with the Tullamore race. Before I give the result, Terence's wife Olive would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event a success especially the Peninsula members partaking in the breeder exchange and hopefully everybody will continue to support this event in the future. Congratulations to the winner, the men of the moment with the Golden touch Drew and Martin flying as Harper and Young clocking a young bird on 1753. This bird was bred by the father and son team of Raymond and Michael Strain from Millisle club. The top prize went to the Cloughey partnership of £190. Runner up went to Portavogie father and son team of Robert Thompson and Glen with a pigeon bred by Ballywalter's Sam Regan. The local trainer's vel was 1729 and they lift £110. Third sees Alec Trimble and family from Donaghadee club clock a bird bred by Robert and Glen Thompson on 1722 to take a prize of £80. Well done to everyone concerned.

Harmony Lofts Hot Spot Results - Weekend 23/08/14

With the W.N.W. wind it made for a steady race. Top Hot Spot winner is the loft of Spence Bros. Lisburn, clocking bird ring no. 10293 vel. 1393 to finish 3rd Club, taking a good Ulster Fed position and collecting £50. Second Hot Spot goes to Rodney Adamson of Corcreeny Club who finished 2nd Club, 41st Section G, and 94th Open with bird ring no. 10359 vel. 1374 winning £30. Third Hot Spot goes to A & A Cheevers of Crossgar, winning 5th Club, 5th Section, 18th Open EDC with bird ring no. 10179 vel 1369 and collecting £20.
There it is, a bird in the Ulster Fed, one in the NIPA and one in the E.D.C. Well done to the many fanciers who clocked our birds this weekend to win top club positions. Many thanks to all who contacted us with their velocities this week.

This week it is Derby time for the East Down Combine with two Derby races scheduled one and inland from Skibbereen and included in this is the breeder/buyer and then the cross channel Derby from Talbenny. We hope for two good races.
