EAST DOWN COMBINE
Reports by Clifford Browne
HARPER & YOUNG ON TOP AGAIN
Saturday August 16th saw the East Down in Mount Charles near Nenagh for the first of two races from there and with a fresh Westerly wind the birds were away at 11.15am and again it was the Cloughey club or more precisely the partnership of Harper & Young who took the top three open places in what again proved a very fast race for the early birds although it was a more erratic race than the race from Tullamore the previous week. For the partnership of Harper & Young this is the second Open winner they have had in this year’s Young Bird season so far having had that great result from the 2nd Navan a few weeks ago when they took the top 11 places in the open plus other positions.
Again this week it is the clubs in a line through Annsborough, Killyleagh, Cloughey, Crossgar and Ballywalter which got the early ones, with Crossgar’s McCartan & Woodsides topping the West section and Harper & Young the East Section and again Gordon bros & sons had a tremendous race taking in the top 20 no less than 13 positions from 8th to 20th.
This week sees the birds move further down Ireland to Mallow and as August draws to a close so the end of the 2014 season is only weeks away.

Harmony Lofts Hot Spot Results
Weekend 16/8/14
With strong west wind the E.D.C. fanciers had a good day in our Hot Spot Race. That man Tommy Horner still hot after winning our Midweek race clocked a very good bird to win 4th Club, 4th Section & 31st Open E.D.C. with a velocity of 1817 Bird ring No. 10241 to win £ 50. Tommy's favourite a wee Ash hen. The Annalong loft of Charlie & Jarleth McVeigh takes 2nd spot, 3rd Club & 36th Open E.D.C. with one of our Jos-van-Olmen birds, ring No. 10570 velocity 1809 collecting £ 30. Tommy Horner slips in again with his second bird to claim 3rd place & another £ 20 with bird ring No.10244 velocity 1778, also wins 7th Club.
Well done to all those who clock our birds to take top Club, Section & Open positions but just missed out on a Hot Spot Prize.
