EAST DOWN COMBINE
Reports by Clifford Browne
Harper & Young take first 11
It was a case of the same again with regards the second race from Navan scheduled for Saturday July 26th. After a glorious week of Summer weather it was all change come the weekend and again all three NI organisations gave the Saturday a miss with regards to trying to hold a race. The East Down Combine again opted to race mark on the Saturday evening for a Sunday race although for later on Sunday yet more rain was forecast but the race controller was able to get the birds away at 7.45 am and with the help of a Westerly wind the birds made good time with leading velocities just short of the 1700 mark. Again however the number of competing members was reduced with some 50% competing but this hopefully will pick up as the birds move on this week to Mullingar.
What a race for the Cloughey partnership of Drew Harper and Martin Young who took the top 11 places in the open followed by a bird to H & A Keenan & ptnrs also Cloughey and then three more for the Harper & Young team followed by Gordon bros & Sons with Crossgar ’s Tom Horner in at 17th open and it this bird which tops the West section but it was definitely a day for the East Coast lofts.

Harper and Young Best Loft in the opening Young Bird Race
The young bird season kicked off on Sunday the 20th of July with Navan being the first race point for liberation. Winning team goes to top racing team of Drew Harper and Martin Young racing their birds in Cloughey club to lofts sited in the centre of the fishing village of Portavogie on the East coast of the Newtownards Peninsula. The partnership had five pigeons in the top six from an Amalgamation entry of 1083. Drew and Martin are two very dedicated and experienced fanciers and introduced some top Van Dork lines from the North East of England via Bob Donaldson and these have won from the start for them and it was from this family of pigeons that the winner was bred. Congratulations to you both on a great start to the young bird racing and I’am sure that we will be hearing of more victories before the end of the season. (Yes indeed just look at their result from Navan 2 - CB)
