EAST DOWN COMBINE
Reports by Clifford Browne
MICKEY'S MALLOW
The weather once again played its part in disrupting the race from Mallow scheduled for May 10th so for a second time this season race marking was postponed until the Saturday evening and the race was flown on the Sunday. There was a noticeable reduction in both birds and members competing, probably as a result of the previous week’s race, the continuing unsettled weather and lofts preparing birds for the first of the Derby races due to be flown from Skibbereen on Saturday May 17th.
The birds in Mallow were released into a West wind on the Sunday morning at 10.20am and the leading birds took full advantage of the wind to record velocities in the 1600s. The open winner this week is to Mickey Croskery of the Annsborough club whose winner recorded a velocity of 1641. This was then followed by another outstanding result for Gordon Bros & sons who take the next 5 placings in the open through the Cloughey club and had other birds to finish at 27th, 28th, 29th & 33rd open, another great result from this top loft. Details of their early pigeons are:
2nd open is a cheq cock of Kris Wynants lines. This cock was 13th open Mullingar in the first race of this season.
3rd open was a pied cock, a direct Sheldon Leonard. This cock was 4th open Mullingar this season.
4th open was a grizzle cock, another of Kris Wynants lines. This cock was 7th open Mullingar and also 4th open Mount Charles (Nenagh) this season.
In 5th open is a blue cock, a Sablon, and this cock was 4th open in the Skibbereen classic in 2013 and 4th Fermoy in the Derek Wishart race of 2013.
6th open is a blue cock, Sablon/ Gaby Vandenabeele. This cock has a 9th open and 37th open as a young bird.
In 27th open is a blue cock. This cock was 5th Mullingar, 22nd Tullamore, 5th open 1st Mount Charles (Nenagh) and also 2nd club 2nd Mount Charles (Nenagh) already this season. His breeding is Lou Wouters/Vandenabeele, a g.son of “Pale Rider”.
In 28th Open is a cheq hen. This hen was 18th open Tullamore, 37th open Mount Charles (Nenagh) this season and her breeding is De Meyer (A&L Painter).
At 29th open is a Blue hen, Janssen/Vandenabeele, a g/dtr of “ Pale Rider”. This hen was runner up ace young bird EDC 2013.
Bob Connolly of Downpatrick is 7th open with Donnelly Bros of Annalong 8th and Walker & Niall Cully of Portavogie 9th and J Maguire & ptnrs of Dundrum 10th followed by four more to Annsborough so the early birds were mainly to the East Section this week. Thanks for all the information on the race.
