EAST DOWN COMBINE
Reports by Clifford Browne
Roy Irwin tops from Tullamore
For the second EDC race of the season the birds were in Tullamore and unlike the first week when the wind direction was West North West, this week it was East South East so the open result this time favoured the West side of the Combine. As so often happens when the wind is from an easterly direction there were pockets of early morning mist on the route home so to allow for this to clear, Race Controller Roy Irwin did not give the instruction to liberate until 10.00am and as the result shows it was the right decision for Roy had the best bird on the day from over 5,500 entered. The leading velocities were well into the 1400s. The Ballylesson club had the next three in the open with two together to C & D Smyth & sons who timed two sisters, both Busschaerts and this was closely followed by a bird to John Patterson. The next three are to Bangor with Burgess & Brennan having the first of these followed by two to R Moore & son. Other clubs featuring amongst the early ones were Newtownbreda and Killyleagh Central.
There were some great individual performances at club level. In Annalong Kevin Rooney & son & dtr had the top five. In Ballynahinch the winner Rab Hunter had a further 7 in the top 12. Ronnie Johnston took the top six in Comber. Roy Irwin had the top five in Dundonald which included the open winner as well as 10th, 12th, 13th & 14th open. Jackie Scates had the top three in Hillfoot. Gordon Bros had the top four in Killyleagh Central, E &A Rogan the top three in Newcastle whilst in Tyrella Sean Milligan & dtr took the top seven. Roy Irwin won the West section whilst Burgess & Brennan won the East.
