For the 3rd race for Young Birds the EDC were in Tullamore on the 8th of August on a beautiful Summers day with clear skies and a light East wind which saw the 4,700 birds away at 9.45am and with a change of wind direction from the two Navan races a different result was on the cards with the leading velocities in the 1400’s . It was the turn of the more Westerly clubs to benefit from this change in wind direction with the open winner being to Ballylesson’s B Hogg & Sons who had two together for 1st and 2nd open and West Section with their next bird 4th open
Annalong’s Kevin Rooney and family were 3rd and 5th open and won 1st East section whilst the remaining top ten in the open were to Dundonald and Ballylesson members the full Open Section and Nominated winners were as follows ;

John Trueman
I was saddened to learn of the recent death of John Truman of Newtownards on August 3rd . It was on October 18th 1966 at a meeting held in the Newtownards Clubrooms that the East Down Combine was formed and the First Secretary of the Combine elected at that meeting was John Truman ,a real gentleman and a great Secretary .Over 50 years has passed since then and many of today’s members will not recall those exciting far off days long ago but it is thanks to men like John that the East Down Combine continues to flourish . I extend sympathy to his sons & daughters and their families at this sad time as we remember one of the gentlemen of the sport .
