Mullingar got EDC 2021 season Underway
After a delayed start to the 2021 season because of Bird Flu restrictions and the continuing restrictions in relation to Covid 19 the East Down Combine got the 2021 season underway on May 1st with a revised OB race programme which will be as follows :

May15th Horse & Jockey

May29th Skibbereen Classic
5th June Talbenny
12th June Bude & Derek Wishart Classic (same Day)
19th June 2nd Mallow
26th June Penzance & Penzance Classic
1st July St. Malo OB Classic
After the long break it was good to get racing underway and the days prior to the first race had seen very favourable training weather and this went towards the large entry of 4,433 birds for the first race and a good forecast for the Saturday with a light North wind and occasional showers ensured everyone enjoyed a good start to the season but all clubs had to adhere to the same COVID 19 Protocols as last season and I would direct all members to the EDC Website for full details on these .
The birds in Mullingar were released at 8.45am and the leading birds recorded velocities in the 1400’s with pride of place in this opening event going to the Dundonald partnership of Mr & Mrs Stephen Brown ahead of clubmates Roy Irwin with two for 2nd and 4th open with Cowan & McCartney 3rd open. These were the leading birds in the West section with West section birds taking the top 12 open places through Ballylesson’s John Patterson at 5th open ,Roy Irwin’s 3rd bird at 6th open then two together to Newtownbreda’s Mark McClure with the next three to Dundonald’s Mark Foulis with Stephen & Mrs Brown completing the top 12 .
Bangor club had the majority of places in the East section with Reggie & David Moore having a particularly good result with 12 of the 20 section places including the top 5 . Downpatrick Premiers Phillip McCullough & dtr having 3 placings with Bangor’s Lambert & Stewart, Burgess & Brennan and Comber’s Francis Gilmore 1 each .
