Yearling hen wins St Malo Derby for Gary Lyttle

The final race in the EDC Old Bird programme is the Old Bird Derby from France which again this year was flown from St.Malo on July 1^st when 72 members entered 269 birds in what proved a testing event with just 13 birds recorded in race time .Liberation was at 11.30am into a light NW wind which saw no birds home on the first day of this 3 day event . Next day the winning bird was timed to Comber Social member Gary Lyttle who was declared the winner of this race in 2020 but a problem at one of the centres on that occasion led to some delay as to the final result. This year Gary timed a blue cheq yearling hen now christened “Maggie” on the second morning and as she is only a yearling, she had never been further than Talbenny in Wales which she flew this year as well as having flown 5 inland races . For the St. Malo race she was sitting eggs 10days .

The bloodlines of “Maggie” are on the dam’s side she is off a daughter of Sam Duke’s Triple Crown winner when paired to a cock from former King’s Cup winner Allan McDonald down from a double Penzance winner of Allan’s .

Gary exercises his birds twice a day but nearer to the Derby they were given an open Loft combined with a 25 mile training toss most nights . Congratulations to Gary Lyttle on his success and Gary thanks both Sam and Allan for their part in his success.

With only 13 birds in race time there were three lofts which recorded two birds each in the result ,the first of these was the Ballynahinch loft of Colin Lavery & Son who were runners up to Gary Lyttle and then had a second bird in at 6^th .

The first of Colin’s and placed 2^nd open was a 3yo blue pied Hen sent to the race feeding an 8 day old youngster .Already this year this hen had flown Bude and had had 2 races up Ireland .Sire of this hen is a James Cleland cock which Colin got through Hugh Burns and the dam Colin bought at Gavin Morrison’s sale and the bloodlines are Mickey Croskery and Tom Marshall .

Colin’s 2^nd bird at 6^th Open was a 3 yo blue cheq cock who went to the race on 12 day eggs and already he and 2 of his sisters had several positions to their credit the cock himself having been 2^nd club Skibbereen in 2020 whilst one of his sisters had a 1^st club Talbenny whilst another sister had been 2^nd club 26^th open Penzance in 2019 . The Sire of this cock is again of the James Cleland bloodlines through Hugh Burns while the dam is of L Magee & son bloodlines and this hen was 1^st club 2^nd open Bude in 2016 and 1^st club 4^th open Bude in 2017 . Colin trains his birds from about 15miles regularly .

3^rd Open was to the Annsborough partnership of Geraldine and Packi (Paddy) Brown who timed a 2yo Red cock which had been in every race this season and went to St.Malo on eggs 10days The sire is of Tom Marshall bloodlines and the dam is from Annalong’s Kevin Rooney and anyone following this year’s results will have noticed that the Loft of G & P Brown have been enjoying a great season . The birds here are trained regularly from Castle Bellingham and Balbriggan .

4^th Open was the Millisle loft of Jackie Rankin who featured last year from this race when he recorded 6 of his 7 birds entered in the open result and it was the first of these which had been 10^th open which is in at 4^th This year . This is a 3 yo Blue cheq hen which last year had been the first bird into the Portavogie Centre and which this year was the only bird into that Centre in race time . The sire of this hen is C & L Woodside and Brockamp whilst the dam is of Euro Diamond Bloodlines .

Annsborough’s B Jennings was the 2^nd loft to record 2 home at 5^th and 8^th open . Then it was the Annalong lofts of McLoughlin Bros at 7^th followed by 2 to the lofts of P Trimble &Grandson at 9^th & 10^th .
