WEATHER FURTHER DISRUPTS PROGRAMME
As mentioned last week the poor weather for pigeon racing was the reason that the East Down Combine made the decision to replace the scheduled 7th of August race from Tullamore with a race from the shorter race point of Mullingar but even that was fraught with weather problems which meant that the race could not actually be flown until Tuesday August 10th ,this was followed the next week by a return to the scheduled programme with a race from the Horse & Jockey but again poor weather conditions on the Saturday & Sunday led to the race being flown on Monday August 16th and we will look at this in the next article. Meantime as I write word has just come through that the 2nd Horse & Jockey race scheduled for August 21st has now also been replaced by a return to the shorter racepoint of Mullingar again because of the very unsuitable weather we have been experiencing and a quick look at the forecast does not make pleasant reading for that weekend either so with all this in mind the rest of the Scheduled programme is under review by the committee . I must say that in all my years connected with the sport I don’t recall such a prolonged period of unsuitable weather for pigeon racing .
Right, now to the results of the race to hand Mullingar. Liberation took place on Tuesday August 10th at 10am into a light SW wind and the birds recorded velocities in the 1400’s . 1st and 2nd open were recorded to Tony Smith of Killyleagh Central with clubmate Clifford Healy at 3rd Open . 4th open went to Bob Connolly of the nearby Downpatrick Premier club and then it was Cloughey members through Gordon Bros & Sons ,Harper & Young &C & H Cully taking the next 10 places and then it was back to Downpatrick and again and it was Bob Connolly with the next 3 places which meant the that the top 17 open places were to East Section lofts .Top two in the West section were to McCartan & Woodsides of Crossgar who in fact had 11 of the top 12 West section places including the first eight . RONAN McVEIGH
Once again it is my sad duty to inform the fancy of the death , after a period of illness, of another well-known and popular fancier Ronan Mc Veigh of Newcastle who raced in partnership with his son Connaire in the Dundrum club . I first got to know Ronan when I met him along with his great chum and this year’s King’s Cup winner Liam McCall at the INFC annual dinner when I had been doing a report on one of Liam’s earlier successes with his great Hall of Fame pigeon “Red Laddie”. Each year thereafter I always had a chat with Ronan’s table at the annual dinner and what a gentleman he was and let me tell you that Ronan & Connaire could also race a successful pigeon and Ronan was competing right to the end with his last visit to the loft being for the INFC Yearling National this year in June when he was delighted to clock in from that event to finish 46th Open and just prior to this it was a 3rd East Section Talbenny for the loft . On behalf of all who had the privilege of knowing Ronan I extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Sheila, Connaire and the entire family at this sad time and I have included a couple of Photos of Ronan with son Connaire and the McCalls.
