Young Bird Season Review
The Young bird season soon arrived down at the Cabbage Patch with the first race being missed by all of the members as nobody sent, but the following week 5 Members sent 62 Birds to Blandford. These were then liberated at 8am in a West Wind.
Taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd was Steve Holloway with a Jan Aarden Chequer Pied Cock, a Blue Chequer Busschaert x Janssen Hen & a Red Pied Jan Theelen Hen.
4th Club was Paul Stone with a Chequer Pied Braspenning x Jan Theelen Cock.
5th place was Geoff Barker with a Chequer Lambrecht Hen. Finally 6th went to Paul Stone with a Blue Braspenning Hen.
Race 3 was next to be flown from Yeovil, with these up nice & early at 6:15 in a South Wind.
Peter Glass took the first 3 places with a Blue Chequer Hen & 2 Blue Hens all from his own family. Taking 4th, 5th & 6th position was Billy Watkins with a Blue Soontjen Hen from Steve Sheffield stock, a Blue Pied Hen bred my Mark Edwards & a Dark Chequer Jellema x Kenyon Cock.
Race 4 was flown from Honiton with these being liberated at 9am in a South West Wind, with Billy Watkins taking the First 3 positions with a Blue Cock bred by Mark Edwards, a Dark Chequer Jellema x Kenyon Cock, who took 6th Club Yeovil the previous week. Bill’s final pigeon was a Chequer Pied Hen bred down from Les Jones & Dave Albon’s national pair on one side, and Bill’s old pied family on the other.
Race 5 was flown from Blandford with these being released at 8.40 in a West Wind.
Continuing the previous weeks form was Billy Watkins taking 1st Club, 28th Inter Counties Fed with the Blue Cock, the previous weeks winner from Honiton who’s now been named “Billy’s Bullet” who was bred by Mark Edwards. Bill’s 2nd pigeon was a Blue Pied Hen also bred by Mark Edwards, previously 5th Club Yeovil. Bill’s 3rd bird was a Chequer Cock, a Busschaert x Bill’s old pied family. 4th Club was Jaio Figueira with a Chequer Pied Bucchaert Hen. Finally taking 5th & 6th positions was Peter Twyford with a chequer Pied Cock & a Chequer Hen both bred from Peter’s successful Multi Combine winning Busschaert family.

Race 6 was flown from Yeovil, with the distances flown ranging from 116-122 miles for the members who sent. These were liberated at 10am in a West Wind. Taking the top 3 positions once again was Billy Watkins with “Billy’s Bullet” clocking up his third win in 3 weeks. This Cock was bred by Mark Edwards. Bill’s 2nd bird was a Blue Pied Hen also Mark Edwards, previously 5th Club Yeovil & 2nd Club Blandford. Bill’s 3rd pigeon was the Blue Chequer Cock, 3rd Club the previous week from Blandford. Taking 4th,5th & 6th Club was Peter Twyford with a Chequer Hen, a Blue Pied Hen & a Blue Hen which were all Busschaerts.
Race 7 was due to be flown from Honiton, but due to the liberations due to take place that weekend from Yeovil it was decided to race from a shorter race point of Stoney Cross. Taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, once again was Billy Watkins with the winner being “Billy’s Bullet” clocking up his 4th win in 4 weeks. This Cock being bred by Mark Edwards. Billy’s 2nd Club was a Blue Soontjen Hen, previously 4th Club Yeovil. 3rd Club was a Chequer Pied Hen from Bill’s old pied family x with a Busschert. 4th & 5th positions went to Peter Glass with 2 Red Chequer Cocks. 6th position went to Peter Twyford with a Blue Pied Busschaert Hen.
Race’s 8 & 9 were flown the same day, with an inland race from Blandford & a UBI Combine race from Guernsey.
In the Guernsey race the birds were liberated at 8:30 in a West Wind. Billy Watkins did it once again taking a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd with a Blue Pied Hen bred by Mark Edwards taking the winners position, also 26th Inter Counties Fed as well as 39th UBI Combine. This Hen’s been consistent all season, being a previous winner of 2nd Club Yeovil, 2nd Club Blandford & 5th Club Yeovil. Second Club was a Chequer Pied Hen bred from from a Steve Sheffield Soontjen who also took 28th Inter Counties Fed & 41st UBI Combine. 3rd Club was a Blue Chequer Cock bred off pigeons gifted to Bill last year by Johnny Chipperfield after finding out that a fox had entered the loft and killed his young bird team. This Cock also took 50th UBI Combine.
The Blandford birds were liberated at 8am in a West South West wind.
Finishing the season in style was Billy Watkins taking the first 3 positions with “Billy’s Bullet” clocking up his 5th win in 5 races. This Blue Cock was Bred by Mark Edwards. 2nd Club was a Blue Soontjen Cock from Steve Sheffield stock. 3rd Club was a Blue Cock bred by Simon Schofield. 4th & 5th Club was Peter Twyford with a Blue Hen & a Blue Pied Hen. Finally in 6th place is Peter Glass with a Red Chequer Cock from his own family.
