" HOME OF THE FAMOUS FIVE "

MAIDSTONE

The Welsh National Flying Club 2017 young bird programme got underway with the first of three advertised young bird races with the first being  from Maidstone in Kent an average distance of around 160 miles to the majority of Welsh fanciers competing, as a result of good young bird racing to date we were pleased to see a steady flow of entries on board and with everything secured  the transporter  headed east along the M4  to Maidstone and settled down in the early hour awaiting first light and a possibly an early liberation

From 6.30am at the home end the race advisory committee were once again working to liaise with the many major English Federations and Combines heading North that were sited along the South coast awaiting news on their liberation time, it was with mutually agreed that as the lads on site were prepared and ready to go they kindly informed us that would hold off to allow us to cut the strings and get our cargo on their way in a less congested sky through out the journey the weather was report as blue skies and a light South Westerly wind by our various contacts along the line of flight, as fanciers predictions were being made for the first pigeons to cover the course in 3 1/4 hours or so

The successful partnership of Davies & Coombes

Taking the leading honours with a remarkable team performance of 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th open were the consistant and previous Welsh National winning partnership of Davies and Coombes from Blackwood timing in five of their entries on the 3hr 20 mark, flying 164 miles with velocities of  1432.7,1431.8,1431.6,1431,5 and 1431.4, the winning pigeon is a young smokey blue cock which is bred down from the Frans Zwols Family through the "Blue Prince" lines on the sires side whilst crossed  through to a grand daughter of pigeons named "the boy and the queen" also of the Frans Zwols strain, the partnerships second arrival, is a blue hen which comes out of the Leon Boers family lines which the partnership have established over many years and are well known for coming direct from the loft of Leon himself the dam of this pigeon is a grand daughter of the partnerships 103 National and Combine winner.. in third the partnership timed in some new blood that they have introduced another blue hen these being Alwyn Petrie from Holland whilst crossed with their 2014 Maidstone National winner.  Their fourth arrival through the trap another blue, a cock on this occasion and is bred through the Hereman Ceusters crossed Frans Zwols rounding off such an outstanding performance the partnerships famous five was a blue cock again of 100% Leon Boers bloodlines.

Two fellow club mates were close behind and therefore took the following leading position as Dave Thomas also from Blackwood takes 6th to 8th open on 1428 followed by the Williams and Owens partnership timing in also on 1428, with decimals again dividing up the positions, so as you can see it was a blanket finish for the lads up there not only in the National but Club and Federation

by clock checking later that evening it seemed to  turn out to be a succesful race all told for the first young bird race as most lofts experienced good returns yes theres always going to be the odd pigeon away at most lofts but in whole a good start to young bird racing

again moving forward on a positive note we were pleased to accept a few new members on the build up to  basketing night for this race, which is continuing to show that were maintaining our presence here in Wales amougst the leading organisations, and as such our 2017 members will be pleased to see that as part of our ten year anniversary they are being thanked and rewarded for thier continued support to the Welsh National FC by reducing membership fees to £10 for 2018  to mark the occation.

So we’re on the road again next week a few miles further as we head to battle near hastings and with such a good race under our belts were hopeful we`ll have close on the same turn out for this race ..taking into account ybs which aint on darkness and heavy in the moult will soon be put away for next year.  A date for your diary now and the Welsh National and Welsh North Road Federation presentation night is again at the Seamans Mission club in Newport on sat 9th of December tickets as last year £18 per head ..so book early to save disappointment as numbers are limited and a good night is always had by all
