G & M CLAYTON & LOVELL BROTHER
Winners of the J & L TIMBER PRODUCTS (Newcastle)
Sponsored Maidstone 2
First of all before reporting on this week’s winners, we apologize for the late publication, this was due to three races back to back and the late response on the winners of the previous event, which caused us some issues.
So here we go ,
With the Welsh North Road federation who convoy our pigeons to each race deciding on pushing back their young bird programme this gave us the opportunity of being able to salvage one of the cancelled races due to covid restrictions with an additional Maidstone race from the Kent town of Maidstone in Kent an average distance of 155 to 200 miles for our members.
Basketing took place on the Saturday evening and whilst it as a steady entry we were pleased to see and welcome a number of new members from other organizations enquiring and joining on the night, with the birds on route the journey across the M4 corridor and M25 to Maidstone was untroubled with the birds arriving in Maidstone just before midnight and with the liberation site being a locked area the transporter parked up outside for the night awaiting the arrival of key holder the following morning.
7am and with the lorry now positioned and prepared for liberation, we were disappointed not to be able to get them away early due to the conditions at various points throughout Berkshire and Wiltshire as early morning mist drifted in and out for the next few hours, however as the forecast indicated, conditions would improve as the morning went on so we patiently sat and waited for the opportunity to cut the strings.
On regular checks throughout the following hours and with the birds keen to get away our window of opportunity was finally approaching as the final obstacle from Bracknell to Reading finally showed signs of clearing and as a result allowing us to finally liberate at 10.45 with good visibility for miles and a light North Easterly breeze
Pigeon “Landi” past performances now including 1st open Welsh National Maidstone 2
G & M Clayton & Lovell Bros 1st open Welsh National
Taking top honours with a velocity of 1312 .90 we head to the partnership of G & M Clayton & Lovell Bros from the Crumlin area who on the day experienced three arrivals together two hens and a cock however on landing the cock instantly seeing three hens decided to take its time on the loft driving and dancing about before entering which eluded the partnership of a possible 1,2,3, however thankfully the boys were more than happy and pleased to be rewarded with 1st and 2nd open, the winning pigeon is a blue hen which on arrival as the other two were performing went straight in leaving, taking 1st open Welsh National Maidstone 2. The winning pigeon in was a blue hen called LANDIE, she is a past winner of 1st club, 1st fed, 1st OPEN NATIONAL from Eastbourne y.b. In 2018, 1st club, 1st OPEN Fed Newbury, 1st club 8th fed Marlborough, 3rd NATIONAL Battle in June this year, and now whatever this result will be. This well fancied entrant not only takes the pools up to £5 but also wins the J & L sponsored free nomination prize of the two set of perches they gladly donated.
The partnerships second arrival on the clock recording a velocity of 1309 is a blue cock who himself has won at least 5 x 1st club in the past 2 years and now whilst either could of claimed the top honour now has a 2nd Welsh National performance to his credit.
But a bird that has won a possible 2 x 2 x 1st plus a 3rd NATIONAL is you must agree a bit special. She is bred out of a g/son of Lovell Brothers No 1 stock pair who are responsible for at least 50 x 1st prize winners, the dam is a G/dtr of TIPS, the partnerships third arrival once it decided to trap was also in the top positions with a 5th open on a velocity of 1304.
So well done to the Clayton and Lovell partnership on an outstanding performance as anyone of your three arrivals could be described as the national winner on arrival only separated by the trapping.
Dividing the winners we go South to Newport and the family partnership of T Hawkins family consisting of Tom, Ray and young Jack, they to experienced multiple clocking, timing in two pigeons on velocities of 1308.6 and 1308.1 taking 3rd and 4th Open Welsh National both arrivals originate from local fanciers Dave and John Zerk (Roadhog lofts) from Cardiff both blue cocks and come down from the Herman Ceusters family lines, the partnership race their ybs on a widowhood system and whilst the partnership are pleased with their first arrival taking the higher position they are also pleased to see one of their most consistent ybs in recent weeks having a first and second club position to its credit along with a 18th Folkstone national the week before today’s race.
T Hawkins family 3rd & 4th Welsh National Maidstone 2
As the day went on and following a long awaited liberation the race unfolded into a challenging affair whilst some lofts were clocking multiple pigeons together others struggled with long periods between arrival times but thankfully by clock checking a few hours later there wasn’t many moans and groans to be heard, as we congratulate the winners.
Mr. & Mrs. K Beresford & Son winners of the Dougie Rooke memorial trophy old bird averages 2020
Considering just weeks ago racing seemed out of the question we have to date been able to stage three old bird racing therefore this also gave us the opportunity of awarding the "Dougie Rooke " old bird average trophy to the partnership of Mr. & Mrs. K Beresford & Son with a Kidd in the runner up spot followed by the partnership of Pullen, Hurley & Llewelyn in 3rd
Andy Kidd runner up old bird averages winner
We now move onto the young bird program in a few week’s time when we once again kick off with Maidstone followed by Battle a few miles further which is when we welcome Truck and Plant Hire who have kindly sponsored the race with an additional £1000 prize money for the leaders, from then we move to the final race of a testing year.
Folkstone a distance of 180 to 220 miles
Pullen, Hurley & Llewelyn 3rd old bird average winners
With racing by completed we can look forward to the presentation evening which is again provisionally booked on 28th Nov at the Seamans Mission club in Newport, we can all understand with restrictions on gathering currently in place this may well need to be pushed back a few weeks or so until the Welsh government allow a return to some normality but were pleased to be ready as soon as things are allowed with tickets priced at £10 per head this covers the buffet style serving a disco and artist for the night so hopefully we`ll be looking at yet another sell out evening
