The Joe Murphy Column
We could not attend the funeral of my dear friend John Tyerman, but my mate Guy Reed informed me that it went smoothly his wife Linda was very well and coped good. A few Scots boys were there, and the pipes were played at a very nice church and the lady solo singer who was excellent. A lot of police influence, but this was probably even split between pigeon men and the police who attended, although no one from pigeon world made speech at the church. The wake was a few miles away and we stopped there and had a couple wines and I was back on the 18-30 hovercraft in a gale force wind. Weather is not good here for tomorrow; so no lib for the first BICC race at Falaise until Sunday, typical pigeon racing eh mate! Good luck to you and Kevin for the new season wishing you all the best your Guy’.
A Poem about life as it was
Received an email from Ron Fewing who wrote ‘Hope you and the family are keeping well, I have attached a little something of the olden times and hope you like it. ‘We met and married a long time ago, we worked long hours when wages were low. No telly, no bath, for times were hard. Just a cold water tap and a walk in the yard; no holidays abroad, no carpets on floors, we’d coal on the fire and didn’t lock our doors. Our children arrived (no Pill in those days). We brought them up without any state aid. They were safe going out to play in the park, and old folk could go out for a walk in the dark. No Valium drugs and no LSD, we cured most of our illness with a good cup of tea. No vandals, no muggings (not much to rob) we felt we were rich with a couple of bob. People seemed happier in those far off days, Kinder and caring in so many ways. Milkmen and paperboys would whistle and sing. A night at the pictures was quite a mad fling. We got our share of troubles and strife, but we had to face it the pattern of Life’. I know the pigeon racing is up and running I will keep an eye on Kevin’s results in your articles of course keep up the good work, take care and chat soon your Irish friend Ron’.
Champion League Final
We thoroughly enjoyed the semi-finals of the Champion’s league when Liverpool got their 4th goal it was unbelievable so late in the game. Then low and behold Spurs go and do the same thing the following evening. Never in my life have I watched so much drama and to have 2 English clubs in the champion’s league final is brilliant. Tonight, we have Arsenal and Chelsea in their semi-final and hopefully they both can meet each other in the final. What a boost for English football this would be.

Bo’ness RPC
News from Martyn Brown who writes ‘Hi Joe, I hope you are well, as you will know the season is now well under way, with some federations gearing up for the their 5th race by the time this reaches print. Fortunately for me the Central fed decided to start a week later this year having the first race the last Saturday in April, although even with the week’s delay the weather still wasn’t generous to us fanciers during our preparation with the dreaded cold east wind sweeping across the country for most of the build up to the racing. Week Number 1 saw Bo’ness racing from Otterburn with the central fed, roughly about 80 miles to Bo’ness. The forecast for the weekend was less than favourable, with Sunday being the far likeliest day for a race. The race was rightly postponed by 24 hrs and basketting took place Saturday night for a race on Sunday 28th April. A convoy of 963 birds with 279 of them heading for Bo’ness were released at 10-20am into a north east wind, thankfully the wind was not as strong as predicted and the birds made very good time for the first race of the season with the winning bird recording a velocity of 1418 ypm. 1st and 2nd club Bo’ness and very deservedly 1st and 3rd federation go to Joe Smith whose loft is located in a wee place on the outskirts of Bo’ness called Linlithgow. Joe timed two hens in quick succession to record velocities of 1418 and 1406. The club and fed topper which he has named ‘Chucky’ is a blue yearling hen, a Gaston Van De Wouwer he purchased in a kit of 6 from Ian Parsons of Penrith. Sire is ‘Little Mickey’ bred by Ian Stafford and the dam is also bred by Ian Stafford being a daughter of ‘Diamond Daze’. Joe’s 2nd club 3rd fed is another blue yearling hen, bred down through his Louella Hartog that he has regularly timed from the Central 3 bird club races. Sire is bred from 2 direct Hartog’s and was a consistent steady racer before being retired to stock, the dam is also a Hartog herself having been a winner on the road winning 1st club 7th federation from Ripon and 17th federation from Newark as a young bird. Joes birds are flown on the natural system and his team had a number of training tosses in the weeks leading up to the first race from Kirkliston then Soutra Hill, both hens raced the full young bird programme and were flying to chipping eggs, hard work and good planning beating the widowhood and roundabout systems this weekend. 3rd Bo’ness club recording a velocity of 1385ypm was Martin Sneddon, a name that is never far away from the top end of the sheet. Martin timed a 2-year-old dark pied cock the sire was purchased from Len Downie of Fife which is a Taveirne-Rigole the dam is from Jane Newbold and is Ko Nipius pigeon. The cock was flying to dummy eggs overdue and with a ‘wink’ I was told he had been as far as Broxburn. Once again, a massive well done to Joe Smith and his loft manager Linda please see attached photographs to go with report; yours Martyn.

Result from the Ridsdale race with 533 club birds sent by 13 members and transported with the Pentland Federation with Tony Young the new race controller who had the birds away at 09.00 into a light west to south west wind. The birds made quick work of their 1st race in good conditions with probably close on 100% returns. Taking pole position in Traprain is Jimmy Mark of Tranent with a yearling hen. She bred by Wade Brothers of West Auckland from their best lines. In 2nd spot is Newcombe & Black (Kardale Lofts) of Macmerry, they timed a yearling bred from the best of the late Dale Newcombe with added top bloodlines from Geoff and Catherine Cooper's ‘Farmer George’ lines and ‘Etienne Meirlaen’. Its dam was 13th section B from Billericay with the SNRPC. In 3rd place is Sinclair Thomson & Son of Port Seton with a Soontjen. A big thanks to big Chris for working on the trailer over the winter months as it was in pristine condition. Also, very big thanks to all the donors and buyers at the breeder/buyer sale, which was another great success. Thanks once again Joe wishing you and Kevin all the best for the new season ahead. Marking was put back to the Saturday for our 2nd race from Whitley Bay. John Parry had the birds away into light north wind at 09.00. Cleaning up the Traprain club this week are Sinclair Thomson & Son of Port Seton. I’m sure they would have had the first 15 in the club. Their timer was their great 5-year-old hen, the SHU Dewar Trophy winner whose wins include 2nd open SNFC Roye. In 2nd place is a Vandrop x Soontjen with the birds in 3rd and 4th places are Herman Ceusters with the 5th place taken by another great bird, the winner of a Bronze and Silver awards with the SNFC and also including 1st section B 5th open Liege last year.
