This is the time of year that attracts me to racing pigeons, the Nationals, but I must admit I enjoy sending to the local club races. Like on the continent there are plenty of National races to be competing in. Before I had a break from racing the pigeons I was mostly interested in the National FC and forgot about club racing. That is not going to happen this time round, and as I get older, now 75yrs, we never know how many more years we are going to be competing in the races. With that in mind I want to get as many races in as I can and enjoy them all whether 1st or last, there is a reason for everything.

Results.

A little later than usual but our very good fed secretary Steve Harvey has had a holiday before we get too far into the season, don’t blame him. Mind you we are lucky to have good secretaries in both our local feds. Here is the result of the first race in 2024 for the Mid Cheshire Fed from Cheltenham when 75 members entered 1565 birds that were liberated at 10.15am in a light north wind. This was a steady 1400ypm race that saw Ray Lunt racing with Lymm FC take the first 4 positions in the north section and fed by a clear margin. Ray clocked a 3yo followed by 2 yearlings and a 2yo recording vels of 1469 (3) 1468ypm. The next 4 places again in the north section, with vels of 1446/1445/1437 (2) ypm go to Mr & Mrs Carl Hickman, they are three 2yo’s and a yearling, these being entered into the Acton Bridge club. Starting what could be another good season we have W & P Brown who clocked three close together in the Earlestown FC collecting 1st 2nd 3rd club 9th 11th 12th section and open. To complete the top ten, we have I Hill from Sankey Bridge winning 1st & 2nd club 10th section and fed on 1426/1407ypm with L Owen finishing 3rd club on 1401ypm. Now on to the top three in the remaining clubs starting with Frodsham HS where Geofrey Warburton tops the list on 1010ypm in front of Sidney Rogers & Son who take the nest two positions on 970/963ypm. D & P Whitfield show the first three in the Halmer End FC recording vels of 1296/1089 (2) ypm. The Leigh & Atherton HS is won by W J Bradley whose first in the clock recorded a vel of 1356ypm followed by Tony Parkinson 1335ypm and in 3rd place we have Brian Vout also on 1335ypm. S Spataru takes the top two positions in club and section in Runcorn DHS on 1414/1405ypm with 3rd going to A Oates with a vel of 1395ypm. M Williams collects the top three places in the Greenbank club with vels of 1389/1358/1330ypm. Moving on to Middlewich FC where Ebony Crowley is 1st & 2nd on 1383/1372ypm ahead of Peter & Dawn Latham 3rd with a vel of 1323ypm. Arnold & Johnson secure the top 3 positions in the St Helens FC with vels of 1417/1416/1413ypm with three yearlings. That leaves the Rudheath WMHS where D Lowe tops the list on 1374ypm ahead of P & M Child 2nd & 3rd with vels of 1426/1407/1401ypm. The South West Cheshire Fed race from Mangotsfield OB3 saw 59 members enter 992 birds that were liberated at 11-45am in a light south wind. I think it was a bit more than light at this end and it was very cold, in fact I would go as far as to say it was nearly too cold to stand outside for us pensioners. The red card plus 3rd went to Gary Adamson from the Duddon PFC with a yearling hen recording a vel of 1746ypm. 2nd club saw K W Walker & Sons clock up 1675ypm with their first in the clock ahead of K & K Rowland 4th on 1653ypm. Mr & Mrs Nigel Shaw are doing well after winning a 1st National with a stunning blue cock, which we went over to see a few days later. Anyway, back to this result and their winner with the Hankelow club clocked up 1737ypm. After that the result was nearly filled with the master himself Joe Glover whose leaders clocked up 1714/1701/1700ypm with the first being 6th Fed. Jimmy Smith is helping Joe, but I am told that at 90yrs Joe still takes the pigeons for their training tosses with carefully place crates so that they don’t have to be handled. We now move on to the Crewe West End where Mr & Mrs Richard Young collect the red card with a 2yo clocking up 1373ypm also finishing 3rd fed. Bob Humpries is in the club r/u position along with 5th fed on 1714ypm. 3rd club 7th fed goes to Alan Williams whose first in the clock recorded a vel of 1710ypm. 4th club 9th fed sees Mr & Mrs Keith Lovatt end up on 1707ypm. In the Greenbank FC Turner & Son had a good race picking up 1st 3rd 4th club 4th fed recording vels of 1718/1682/ (2) ypm being split by Bogdan Ispas in 2nd position clocking up 1700ypm. The Middlewich 5B saw Jimmy Smith clock three to finish 1st 2nd 4th club 8th & 10th Fed with vels of 1709/1707/1693ypmthese being three yearling blue hens. Coming in 3rd are Peter & Dawn Latham who also saw home a blue hen with a vel of 1701ypm.      In the Winsford HS Mr & Mrs Dave Healey end up 1st & 4th on 1641/1620ypm. 2nd goes to G&A&C Jones recording a vel of 1637ypm ahead of Richard Ormandy with a vel of 1635ypm. In the Halmer End FC & S Harvey take the top two positions on 1680/1678ypm followed by D Everill on 1664ypm in 3rd place ahead of D & P Whitfield 4th on 1661ypm. In the Mid Cheshire Fed race from Mangotsfield when 74 members entered 1,599 birds that were liberated at 10-20am in a south wind. Earlestown winners Bob & Brian Smith the Burtonwood Ace’s secured 1st club 1st North Section 1st Open after clocking up 2259ypm, they are well known for their National performances. In the same club we have W & P Brown are 2nd club 7th North section 7th fed on 2226ypm with A Smith 3rd club 10th north section 10th open on 2203ypm. 1st club 2nd north section 2nd Open go to Sankey Bridge winner J Cooke with a vel of 2245ypm. I Hill collects 2nd club on 2180ypm just in front of Burnette & Delooze 3rd on 2163ypm. In the Lymm FC Ray Lunt takes the top 4 positions plus 3rd 4th 5th 6th north section and open recording vels of 2244(2)/2243/2242ypm. Still with the same club we have Andy Roberts 5th 6th club 8th 9th north section and open on 2226/2224ypm, Andy has been closing in on Ray and the lads in recent years, making them all work harder for their prizes. Other club winners are Mr & Mrs Carl Hickman in the Acton Bridge club taking the top 3 positions on 2179/2146(2) ypm. Over at Frodsham Geofrey Warburton collects the red card on 1975ypm while S Rogers & Son are 2nd & 3rd with vels of 1778/1730ypm. In the Greenbank club John Peever leads the way home on 2068ypm with a 5yo ahead of Martin Williams with an even older 6yo with a vel of 2067ypm ahead of third placed Colin Lindop recording a vel of 2017ypm. In the Halmerend FC D & P Whitfield fill the first three positions with vels of 1712 (2)/876ypm. G Grundy tops the list in the Leigh & Atherton HS recording a vel of 2151ypm followed by Simon Kennedy on 2119ypm and Brian Vout 3rd clocking up 2112ypm. Ebony Crowley is 2nd after seeing home one from Pedro a G Son of Pitbull x G Daughter of Sagan paired to a daughter of Butcher's Boy 1st Open NIPA Tullamore 20315 birds and Sunny a daughter of Skittle x Gold Dust from Goed Red. Over at Rudheath Peter & Mike Child are 1st & 3rd clocking up 2123/2065ypm, first being a yearling followed through the traps by a 5yo. Photos

A couple of photos this week highlighting the bad weather we had for marking night when more than a little rain came down. We see Mr & Mrs Carl Hickman giving Mark Smith a few tips on how they win so many races. The other being my young bird team getting a bit strong on the wing. The other section at the end is where I have my stock birds.
