Les J Parkinson - What’s on my mind this week.
Not got much time at this moment in time for writing but to keep in touch here are a few notes on where we are up to.
Hospital
At the moment the pigeons are not receiving the attention that I should be giving them. I am cleaning out every day and they are being fed and watered as they should be. The reason being, as I write these notes, Elizabeth is getting into her third week in hospital after a nasty fall at home. For that reason, I am spending all the time that I can perched next to her bed in Leighton Hospital where she is steadily improving and hopefully, we will see her back at home in the next few weeks. Thank you to all those who have asked how Elizabeth is getting on.
Sitting.
After a disastrous start to the breeding season all is now well and they are mostly on youngsters, just the odd pair who were a few days later going down on eggs. It looks like putting netting over the vent at the back of the loft has sorted everything out and whatever was disturbing them has decided that its entry to the loft has now been closed off. They are now nearly all listed in my book, just the odd ones to sort out, I have taken my time in booking them all down and steadily moved around the loft without disturbing them no more than needed. I am very pleased with the way they handled, a little on the heavy side but that’s no detriment to them while they are rearing a nest of youngsters. In total there are 43prs sitting so we will have a full team of young birds all withing a week or so of one another which is just what we need. There are a couple of eggs that have not hatched out and while growing if I see something that I don’t like that will have to be sorted. I am looking for about 65ybs by the time we have finished moving them and sorting them out. These young birds are made up of 20 for Ebony and the remainder for myself. They will all be racing to the two sections for the youngsters. In amongst Ebony’s will be another 6 from Ian French who bred some crackers for Ebony I 2023 winning many fed cards, in fact they were part of the team that thrashed mine to the loft last year winning her 14 fed cards against my small handful. They are all raced to the same loft with the Benzing M3 system that has worked well. Going back to the Ian French pigeons, Ebony had 6 and 4 have won cards including red ones. We also have a couple from Alan Mann who have done very well, and Ebony has a good Dark W/F Cock with cards including a couple of red ones. We still have a good team of pigeons from our friend Slav from Macclesfield. Not forgetting a good team of 2024 young birds I had from Ray Lunt that won a few cards. All in all, they have made into a nice team of pigeons, pity we can’t get some good federation racing from across the channel.
Racing
What a problem that there is in this area, when we be able to start racing with the Avian Flu about, I hear it has been suggested that it will be May before we get going. No doubt we will find out before long what is expected of the pigeon fraternity.
