Charity event. ISG.
Every now and again we hold a charity auction and we have just started one for this year with proceeds going to the Ichthyosis Support Group. We cover this charitable event because Kim’s daughter Ebony is a sufferer and ISG are not funded by the NHS. When I hold such events I think, should the money be going to the sport but then I stop and think we should all be able to help others who are not as fortunate as ourselves. When I started this event, I sent out 100 emails and within 48hrs I had 49 pigeons donated so we are off to a flier. The sale will be held on the Elimar Auction site with 100% of money raised going to charity, the added bonus for buyers is, with there being no fee to Elimar so there is no VAT to pay. Any general expenses for the sale will be paid by EPS Ltd. There is a list on the Elimar web site so you will be able to see who the generous vendors are, plus breeding details. This sale list will be updated as and when information is received. If you want to put in a reasonable offer prior to the sale you can, and we will place that bid for you when the sale goes live, minimum bid is £40. These bids will of course be shown on the sales list so if you want to join in it is quite easy. The sales list is growing but we are still looking to add to the list of pigeons for sale, so if you have one you would like to donate please send a copy of the pedigree giving full details to Elimar. These details will then be added to the list for all to see. We intend to start the sale in mid-August and run it on into September with about 40 per week. I have also spoken to Guillaume Vanneste about the sale to see if we can generate any interest from the continent, no doubt he will.
New location.
Called in to see the new location for the lofts of Nigel Shaw after he was forced to move due to HS2, which many think will not happen. Nigel has known he was going to have to move for a good while and it has been a waiting game for both he and wife Wendy. I had spoken to Nigel about the move many times, but he kept it all close to his chest until the deal was finalised. From time to time Elizabeth and myself get in the car and go for a run around, a break from the office, where the girls carry on. For this trip we called in to see what the new venture had to offer. As we drew into the premises the first thing, we saw were two lofts, Nigel has his priorities right. Nigel went on to say this is a 5yr project and after that I suspect it will be retirement and a full-time pigeon fancier. There is an awful lot of work to be done but with Nigel being a successful self-employed builder I see no problem; it is a case of working for himself instead of others. 48hrs after our visit the first of the old bird lofts was completed and the birds ready to go, not sure if he plans to race old birds this year. They have only moved half a mile down the road so the pigeons should soon settle. The young birds loft went up straight away and they were moved in, so I expect them to be flying out in no time. We did of course go to see the pigeons and considering how much they have been moved about they were looking well enough and driving to nest. No doubt there will be a big team of young birds ready for the season, going forward they will be needed to select a good team of yearlings from. There are 15 acres to play with and Nigel has everything planned out for the future. Perhaps another visit in 12 months to see how far forward they have moved.
Racing
The second week’s racing saw a much better weekend for the pigeons, this being the Easter break when temperatures rose considerably. There are some who had not started training prior to this weekend so had the ideal opportunity to get them down the road. I do wonder to myself if those fanciers who had only started training over the Easter break will have an advantage in the coming weeks. I say that because we did have some real cold weather when birds were being trained when it was too cold to stand and wait for them. As far as I was concerned, I took the opportunity to spend some time bringing the garden up to date, the one benefit being we have artificial turf so no lawn to look after apart from a hard brush from time to time. We have an old hoover and I have used that, it comes up looking pristine. I have spoken to a few fanciers over the last week or so and I am told that a few pigeons have failed to reach home in the early races, still don’t know why organisations didn’t put the start date back after the channel was put back a couple of weeks. According to the weather forecast on the Saturday morning the conditions were good no matter where in the country you were racing from and too.
The Mid Cheshire Fed were at Worcester when 59 members entered 1,134 birds that were liberated at 10.45am with no wind. The premier position goes to W & P Brown from the Earlestown club after clocking a yearling on 1550ypm. Others from the same club featuring on the fed result are 8th 15th & 17th R&B Smith. 14th A&E Simpson. 18th & 19th H&S Jolly. Kingsway had a good race in the fed with 2nd L Owen. 3rd Delooze Bros. 4th & 5th J. J Stewart. 6th J Kirk & Son. 13th Magee & Morrill. 16th R Worrell. Wrinehill winner Joe Glover had a good bird on the day finishing 1st & 2nd club 7th & 9th fed being against the odds. D Downes was 1st & 2nd Hindley club 10th & 11th Fed with fellow club member J Caldwell being 12th fed. Tyldesley winner WJ Bradbury also finishes 20th Fed. Club winners not to feature on the fed result this week are, Jones Bros & Karen Jones in the Acton Bridge club. N&S Harvey over at Halmerend while S&F Farnsworth top the sheets in the Leigh & Atherton HS. Peter & Dawn Lather are the winner sin the Middlewich FC while S Herbert & Son do likewise at Rudheath.
In the Middlewich FC the top spot went to Peter & Dawn Latham with a 5yo blue cock on 1415ypm. This was an exchange with the LSC and comes from MSC member George Cardel and was sent sitting 10-day youngsters. This is not the first prize he has won 1sts in the club and gained fed prizes. 2nd & 3rd go to Anthony Evans with two Jan Polder 2yo chequer hens recording vels of 1303/1302ypm.
For the latest Acton Bridge club race, the birds were liberated at 10.45am from Worcester when 5 sent 126 birds. There was an easy winner for Jones Bros & Karen Jones who saw home an established 2yo on 1489ypm. 2nd goes to Geoff Bebbington who clocked a yearling blue Daniel Arriens cock from the Geoff Kirkland x Kannibaal lines and clocked up 1459ypm. Geoff entered one the same way bred into the Derby Arona race where it made the final race and we all know how tough those races are. He was also saying that the club are sending with another organisation who were at Cheltenham and Geoff entered 70 with them because he needs to get them further down as part of their preparation for the National races. Geoff went on to say they came well with the first recording a vel of 1424ypm followed by 3 racing to the trap and all going through in less than 2 seconds. Back to the Worcester result where 3rd & 4th go to Adamson & O’Hanlon who clocked 4 close-together, their first two in the clock are both chequer hens recording vels of 1457/1450ypm and they are both Louis Cooremans.
For their second race of the season the South West Cheshire Fed were at Bath when 58 members entered 839 birds that were liberated at 9.45am with no wind. Greenbank members Mr & Mrs K Jennings topped the list with a 2yo on 1440ypm. Mick & Wendy Mellor who entered their birds in the Crewe West End finish up 2nd 3rd & 5th fed with P Dargan splitting them. Fed secretary Mel Bratt saw home a 2yo to win the Winsford club and collect 6th Fed and was also 9th with his second in the clock, his fellow club members G&K&C Hitchen are 7th with K Bell 10th Fed. Moulton’s P & M Child are 1st club 8th fed with a yearling red cock on 1430ypm. Other club winners in the fed are Brian Heath over at Hankelow clocked up 1404ypm with Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett topping the list in the Middlewich 5B finishing on 1422ypm.
In the Middlewich 5B race from Bath 5 members entered 59 birds when Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett clocked a chequer Marcellis/Soontjen cock on 1422ypm. Doug was saying that this is one of the young bird team last year that were taking hours to come from a training toss, must had covered a lot of ground and now knows the way home quicker than the rest, in this race at least. 2nd & 3rd go to Dave & Lynn Healey who are getting back into their stride after Dave’s illness last year. DJ&CJ Wilkinson are 4th with a blue hen from the Curtis-Wall-Lunt cross Lambrechts with both parents being past winners and also this one is the same way bred as other winners. On this occasion the winning vel is 1392ypm.
