A bit of good news for those who want to enter the Royal Cheshire Show, after discussions with the organisers the entry date has now been extended to the 9th June 2018. As I pointed at the meeting the one problem we have is pigeon racing fanciers are still racing their pigeons. However, there are still plenty of people who show their pigeons and fancy pigeons about to fill a few pens. This is one of the biggest agricultural shows in the country, so the sport can be on show for all to see. There is £25 per class prize money which is more than many race for in their local clubs. A show well worth supporting whether you have racers, show or fancy pigeons and it is a good day out. Talking about getting together, I have not gone down to the club a lot because I am not racing but I recently went down for the marking, I have to say I really did enjoy going down because there was a mix of fanciers who were there to talk about pigeon racing. There is still a lot of pleasure to be had locally but there are changes in the pipeline and they will dictate how well or not so well pigeon racing in Middlewich moves forward. How it will go I have no idea, the problem is in reality there is only one way to go, but will it, I don’t think so.

The local fed didn’t compete in the 65th year reign of Her Majesty The Queen so the Acton Bridge club went their own way for this one and entered by another avenue. The race was from Yeovil when 8 members sent 200 birds in what overall was a good entry and one that would be good if it was on a regular basis. The top spot is taken by Jones Bros & K Jones who recorded a vel of 1524ypm. They clocked a blue w/f yearling cock flown on widowhood. Last year he took 5th club and 12th fed. His dad won the 3 Counties Combine from Messac. As has been the case for many years these winners come from the Andre Clemens line on which they have had over 15 years. 2nd Curtis-Wall-Lunt with a yearling hen who was 2nd Open Central Lancs Combine 5,798 birds two weeks earlier only beat by loft mate and on this occasion clocked up 1496ypm. 3rd is Steve Carroll came home with a vel of 1480ypm with a yearling cock bred & gifted to Steve by Les Green which is out of his famous cock “Gilley” a son of the Merlin pair when he was paired to “Brodie” a direct van der Bulck hen. 4th also going to Curtis-Wall-Lunt with another yearling hen on 1474ypm. The first 4 in this race were all yearlings as were the next 4 in this race.

Karen Jones with their latest winner.

The next race saw normal service resume for land racing which saw 9 Middlewich FC members sending 115 birds to Mangotsfield. 1st goes to W Wilson & Son who appear to keep quiet about their entries which on this occasion recorded a vel of 1596ypm finishing 1st club 12th Fed. 2nd and keeping a good run going are Mr & Mrs Dave Healey who saw their first entry clock up 1571ypm. 3rd are Dickens & Wilkinson who clocked a blue yearling widowhood cock on 1539ypm, this is another one from a round of eggs that came from the top winning lofts of Curtis-Wall-Lunt.

Over at Acton Bridge 6 sent 107 to Mangotsfield when Steve Carroll topped the list with a yearling blue hen bred and gifted to Steve by his good friend Les Green and is out of a son Rossi when paired to a direct Van der Bulck hen which is a sister to Van der Bulcks Miracle hen recording a vel of 1589ypm. 2nd & 3rd are Curtis-Wall-Lunt with a chequer yearling hen being a granddaughter of the excellent Eurovision followed by a blue yearling cock son of Blue Thunder. 4th are Jones Bros & K Jones again with a yearling, they are a team who like racing hens and during a marking night I put some of their hens through and they had good bodies and were light in the hand, just the job for racing.

The Middlewich FC race with the Mid Cheshire Fed who saw 79 members enter 1,336 birds in the Mangotsfield race to be liberated at 10.15am with no wind reported. Starting with the 1st Fed winner the club winners are L Owen over at Kingsway who continue to be the biggest senders in the fed. Dave Pritchard tops the list in the Rudheath club while Mr & Mrs Carl Rowlegde are back to winning ways in the Crewe Premier who are much improved in members and entries this year and doing well. Burtonwood’s R&B Smith secured the top spot in the Earlstown club with Dave Beeston & Son doing likewise at Wrinehill. Steve Carroll wins the Acton Bridge club with W Wilson & Son the red card winner sat Middlewich. J Chadwick took the top three in the Leigh club while R&D Gaskell collect another red card over at Tyldesley leaving the red card in the Hodnet club going to Mr & Mrs Barnett.

The Middlewich 5B saw 7 members send 91 birds to Portland with 1st & 3rd going to Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett recording vels of 1492/1486.5ypm. They are two blue chequer Marcellis they are yearling nest brothers one being 4th the previous week. Keeping them in the hunt for more trophies are W Wilson & Son who are 2nd after their first entry clocked up 1486.6ypm. 4th goes to Mark & Heather Smith who could be coming right for the channel races and in this race record a vel of 1477ypm, Mark clocked the same blue hen that was 2nd two weeks earlier.

The South West Cheshire Fed saw 55 members enter 905 birds that were liberated at Portland in a light south east wind. Dave Pritchard had a good week winning both his local clubs and also topping this fed. The other club winners are A Williams in the Crewe West End. Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett from Middlewich. Nice to see Charlie Peel back in action and winning the Greenbank club. Very long-time winner Joe Glover does the job in the Hankelow club. Having a real good season in the Winsford club taking the first 4 are H Bratt & Son, I bet mate Mick is wondering what he is giving them or maybe giving himself.
