Lanarkshire Federation Presentation Night
Lanarkshire members, friends and guest took the time in the Blantyre Miners Welfare club to celebrate 2022 season prize winners on Friday 24th February.
It was a healthy turnout for the federation committee who put the hard work in to make everything seamless for those in attendance
Unfortunately for the sport social events appear to be on decline which is a disappointing aspect of the culture of present day pigeon fanciers.
Those who attended all gave positive for what was a cracking night of everything pigeons.
The buffet was of great quality and excellent value for money. Well done to the committee and no one left feeling hungry.
This year’s special guest was fanciers from Solway in the Scottish borders .Both brilliant fanciers at the top level of National flying being William Borthwick and John Hodgson.
Both fanciers are 1st Open winners at the extreme distance racing from France into Scotland.
It was great that they took the time to attend and present the trophies and sit on the question and answer panel.
John Lawrie federation President and junior vice President John Leggate managed the night and everyone was thankful for their efforts .
After the presentation of trophies and the buffet John Leggatt organised some questions from the floor about the guests birds, management and medication routine.
Wullie Bothwick is very much a traditional flying the pigeons separate sexes for the earlier part of the season before setting them up for the National programme. He works them around the loft with imitation hawk on a pole. He usually gets a good work out of them and with weekly club racing keeps them in order for the races that matter in Wullies calendar.
He doesn't treat for aliments feeling the constitution of the birds is what counts .He uses natural products in the form of Cider Vinegar to keep their constitution sound.
He feeds a quality mixture with birds being loaded with fats for the extreme distance.
He fly's on proven National pigeons with the base being his great friend Davie Jamieson of Grangemouth. Who is highly regarded as one of Scotland's best National lofts over the years.
John Hodgson also manages his birds on the separation of sexes for the earlier races and in the past has flown fully widowhood with great success and has also managed the birds on the nest cycle again with great success.
John is a pigeon fancier who has won for many decades with different breeds of pigeons but the Busshaert strain from Louella lofts. These lines kept John on the top and more recently he has been flying extreme continental lines, testing them with the NFC and Scottish National.
John again spoke about health and is a great believer in Natural products which he uses throughout the season.
He vaccinates his youngsters twice for PMV and likes to test some of his youngsters at the YB National and these are darkness managed.
Both fanciers have nothing to prove in pigeons being at the top of their game and answered the questions provided openly.
Both took the time to explain their reasons in their management and didn't avoid any potentially difficult ones.
The committee would like to thank them for their knowledge and time and wish them the best for season 2023.
This year’s Champion loft in Lanarkshire federation is Davie Allison of Hamilton who wins the Combine Average Trophy beating over 52,000 birds in the 19 race programme from 60-400 miles.
Well done Davie and full loft report will be available in the fancy press.
Well done to all winners this season as it’s not easy to win at this level of competition.
