Lanarkshire News - Alnwick 1 Lewis McCalley wins back to back 1st Open federation
Alnwick for the pigeons this week, a small village five miles inland from the North Sea and thirty four miles North of Newcastle. The convoy of 2,300 Lanarkshire birds and 11 other crates were liberated early at 0700 in a very fresh west wind on route which only got stronger as the day proceeded.
A steady race was forecast and at the home end it was dull with light rain. Not what was forecast and the weather remained changeable in a very fresh west wind that had significant gusts.
It was a tough race for the later birds!
The winners started hitting the boards after 2hrs 15 minutes for the 92 mile journey, recording a velocity of 1195ypm.
They say lightening never strikes twice but it has in the form of 2 x 1st Open federations in a row for the brilliant Lewis McCalley.
For those that follow Lanarkshire news the name Lewis McCalley will be familiar.
Lewis McCalley winner of 2x 1st Open federations two weeks in a row
In my opinion he is possible one of the most talented fanciers I have come across.
This is only his second race of the YB season and records a 100% record.
The ability to condition a pigeon is an art and Lewis is very much an artist.
As stated you just have to handle them to feel the health and quality of his team.
Lewis McCalleys winning loft
It really is a treat to race mark them at club level.
His winner is a home bred sire 10575 bred by his good friend Mio Krivokapic of Greenfield club, a winner on road of 2nd,5th 24th Federation .The Dam is the oldest pigeon in loft and one he broke from his old loft location in Avonbridge. She was bred by Woodroffe Bros
The 2nd Open is a "Gold Ringer" organised this season by Martin Miller which prize money is raced for in last race of Lanarkshire season from Thirsk. The nest mate was 1st Open federation last week for Lewis.
